Description The Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) is a local, independent non-profit in Jacksonville, FL. JHS was founded in 1885 to serve Jacksonville and outlying areas in an animal control capacity. In 2005, JHS officially became a no-kill shelter. Shortly after, a coalition was formed to make Jacksonville a no-kill city. In 2014, the goal became a reality and Jacksonville became the nation’s largest no-kill city. JHS opened our new Adoption, Education and Pet Help Center in 2017 on our Beach Boulevard property. JHS first moved onto this land in 1920 and has been operating on its grounds since. A fire in 2007 destroyed most of the property but with the support of our community, donors, and friends, the new building is now open.

Very unhappy with this shelter. Went there about 4 weeks ago and adopted a senior cat. We were told he was perfectly healthy and the only thing on the file was some instances of peeing outside of the litter box, but could’ve been because of other cats. Keep in mind we didn’t get his medical records until AFTER we adopted him. We took him home and he’s had non stop diarrhea. ALSO FLEAS!! I thought maybe he was adjusting to new food. When it kept happening I checked his medical files. HE HAD BEEN HAVING DIARRHEA FOR A WHILE BEFORE WE EVEN ADOPTED HIM and it was barely addressed!! I called the humane society and reported this and they said “you weren’t sent home with probiotics? That’s weird..” Didn’t even offer for us to come pick some up! My sister and I spend every day cleaning up diarrhea he tracks everywhere in our apartment. He has thrown up occasionally and has now started howling at us. We don’t have the heart to return him but we’re struggling to make ends meet with bloodwork and medical bills! We’re two college students we don’t have that kind of money! We were fully prepared to deal with problems with a senior cat at some point, but the humane society presented him as a perfectly healthy cat that doesn’t have any issues at the moment. Clearly something is wrong. We’re not the type of people to return a cat, especially because he is so comfortable here and loves us. We are very disappointed and feel like we were taken advantage of. UPDATE: He got bloodwork at the vet and found that his gallbladder levels are EXTREMELY high. This could be an infection or gallbladder disease. Extremely extremely disappointed in the humane society for not testing/disclosing this information

We went to the shelter in hopes to find a dog for our family! I called prior and the ladies at the front desk were very patient and nice! I had a few dogs in mind that I asked about and they were very informative and helpful on the background on each dog! We went there the same day and we met with our adoption counselor Erin! And OMG she’s the best! We had so many questions which she was very helpful with answering! After going through the background of the dog we choose, we finally got to meet him but we’re still on the fence on adopting him, we opted to do a “Staycation” from Wednesday (The day we went to the humane society) and we were scheduled to bring him back that Saturday. She was also very fond of the dog we chose to take home and insured us that she believes he will fit right in! By Friday my kids, my husband and I decided to go back to the Humane Society to officially adopt him! Erin was so kind and sweet and she really made us feel at ease with the whole process (mind you I have 2 little ones at home and wanted to insure I’m bringing the right fit for our family). It’s safe to say we found the perfect dog to call family! 🩵🐾

We've been here a few times. We took a dog for a staycation for 5 days. We often foster kittens and return them when they're at the appropriate weight for spaying/neutering. It's a wonderful experience and our kids enjoy it. It's nice to teach them to care for animals.

Nice facility and the people are nice but it is a struggle to adopt an animal. You wait hours to have a consult for another 20 minutes. The introduction process is not conducive to a proper introduction. You meet them in a larger kennel or room then they take them away. They do not let you walk them or met them where you get to know the animal. I understand liabilities and procedure but it still doesn’t make sense to me. They do let you foster to adopt which is nice. Trying to call is a complete waste of time. No one answers the phone for questions even after they tell you to call or email to follow up. The emails take way too long to respond as well. Everyone seems to have different information about the animal. We are having issues figuring out next steps for treatment that they are providing. Overall, I think they love and care for the animals but do not make the process easy to adopt.

Disappointed with my service, I got a puppy there a couple days ago. Everything was fine, the staff told me she had all her treatments including flea prevention. Not even 3 days later, I spot fleas on her. They promised they would send proof to email of all her treatments… they never did!!!! Don’t get a puppy from here! Who knows what else they lied about….Don’t sell dogs that aren’t ready!👏👏👏

I was very impressed with this shelter. Great staff. Knowledgeable, friendly, and you can tell how much they love pets. I got a cat and he’s been a wonderful addition to our family
