I had an entirely professional and very positive experience with HALS, in spite of NOT being the party selected to provide a lifetime home for one of their rescue dogs. What I'm trying to say is: things did not go my way, and I was (and still am) entirely in love with Hal's rescue dog, yet I can fully attest that this sanctuary is top notch in what they set out to do. The director of HALS (also named Hal) puts the dogs first, and as such - the screening/vetting is rigorous. Hal invested more than a dozen hours in reviewing just my application alone - this is how scrupulous he is. Multiply this by all the dogs currently under his care. Then multiply that by an exponential number of applications for each animal. And finally multiply that by the 100s of dogs who have passed through his sanctuary. It is a tremendous time commitment on his end, and is the definition of a labor of love. He invests this time in the best interest of each dog to decrease chances of having to rehome them in the event that a family doesn't work out, and all the stress and heartache that puts on the dog. I have the utmost confidence that time that he may not have to provide detailed feedback every single applicant is because he is using his time wisely to efficiently process the many applications coming through almost every day. It is also time he is using to provide care to all of the unique and special needs of each dog under his care. I saw with my own eyes the result of all the work Hal put into just one single creature, the result of all the desensitization ultimately resulting in a less stressed animal, and increasing the ability of each animal to be an adoptable, healthy, and happy companion for when Hal does find the right family. I highly recommend Home At Last Sanctuary.
Home At Last Sanctuary takes 20 calls a day from people that took on the responsibility of a dog the are given up on. There is one good reason to rehome your dog. You died. Sometimes there are 300 or more applications on one dog. Only one family will get that dog. Not until after that dog spent time in an experienced foster home like a family companion. There characteristics and behaviors are evaluated. Applications are reviewed and screened to determine if that family is the right match out of maybe 300 applications. Home At Last Sanctuary takes on the lifetime of responsibility when accepting them into our owner surrender program or pull dogs that need special care from the local shelter. If you have had a hard experience maybe others think you are less ready to have a dog and most likely to give up before their lifetime. Blessings to all
DO NOT CALL THIS PLACE! AL THE MAN WHO ANSWERS THE PHONE WAS SUPER RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. When asked about the process of surrendering a pet he asked multiple times why we hadn’t tried to return our dog back to the owners we purchased him from. Extremely rude and I hung up on him. I hope to see him out of business very soon, he has absolutely ZERO customer service abilities, compassion and should NOT be in a people-oriented business. If I could rate 0 stars I would.
I applied for adoption of a dog from this agency, first I was told he had already been adopted. After waiting for about month-n-half I still notice the photo was still on website so I called asked about the dog response "Oh he's laying right here next to my feet". Well that means he's still available and because I said that I was asked to fill out additional info. I think this agency (or the individual at the Rockville, MD location) is prejudice because why on the application does race have to play a part? After seeing what I'm going through to adopt from this company I will never recommend anyone. Everything on the application I qualified to adopt. My husband and I are retired and I was ready for another dog since I had just gone through a stressful family ordeal I was ready to cuddle with a dog. The shelter people never did a home visit, spoke to me and I was within the one mile radius of Rockville, MD required for adoption, I'm less in mile radius. As much as I called, sent emails inquiring about the dog that should have given indication I was interested. If the agency wanted the animal for themselves then take his picture off website and stop lying about having so many applications on that dog and you still processing when actually you want it for yourself or your race question is main objective.
DO NOT ADOPT from this service. They are idiots and deny individuals adoption opportunities if you live in a condo. I tried adopting a 17 lbs dog and was denied within 5 minutes. No wonder there are so many dogs/animals living in shelters and etc.
The person on the phone was very rude..I hope the dogs don’t get the same treatment..
