We are so grateful to have Bruce, someone who actually cares, always available for the health of our amazing little pup. Thanks Bruce!
It’s hard enough to find a doctor I like, but when it comes to my cat, I’m really particular. After a lifetime with cats, it finally dawned on me that a vet who makes housecalls is a great thing. . It’s bad enough when the cat is sick…they really hate it being put in a cage and schlepped to a strange environment to be examined and treated. So it was great not only to find a vet who makes housecalls, but he’s a really, really good one. The first thing I noticed about Dr. Lowenstein, years ago, was his immediate focus on gaining my cat’s trust…while taking in my reasons for being concerned about the cat…eyeballing Bernadette was just as important as anything I said. The news wasn’t good. Bernadette’s kidneys were failing.. Dr. Lowenstein showed me how to keep Bernadette comfortable…how to give her intravenous fluids….and down the road, when the time came, Dr. Lowenstein came over….went to the spot where she was breathing hard..and gently gave her a shot..and peace. And then, Dr Lowenstein stayed until I was okay… and he also helped me with final arrangements. Yes, Bernadette died at home, in familiar surroundings…with a gentle pinch…from a vet she was familiar with. I will never forget the contrast between the way Bernadette left me, to the horror of Felix…a cat I rushed to the traditional vet practice when he suddenly stopped eating and drinking. If only I’d thought to call Dr. Lowenstein for a house call instead. Felix’s last hours and days were a nightmare of shuttling to and from the vet office…and final advice from the vet office to rush him to Animal Medical Center across town..only prolonged Felix’s suffering…He needed to be euthanized there….in a strange place…with unfamiliar people all around. I don’t care how much equipment they have at a vet’s office, it just doesn’t compare to a vet who’s willing to come to your house…to your pet…and who knows what he’s doing…and brings all the essentials with him…just like doctors used to do…when they made housecalls. My current cat, Javert, is of ACC vintage and unknown origins. And Dr. Loweinstein is Javert’s doctor. ( I learned my lesson with Felix) Dr. Lowenstein comes prepared…up to and including.. a soft enclosure to keep the cat secure and calm…and not a tangle of claws and teeth. He’s not in a rush. He’s not just examining Javert..he’s taking the time to observe his moves and behavior….because, of course, his patient can’t tell him what’s bothering him. So, Dr. Loweinstein will watch..and wait..and examine..and test..until he has the answer. It’s a real contrast to the “business model” vet practices that are opening up all around town. Being a shelter cat, it’s not surprising that Javert has a problem with ear infections. Dr. Loweinstein prescribed 2 meds…showed me how to give them…and called…several times over in the coming days..to ask how things were going. He told me to watch for a recurrence…and kept checking in regularly. Months later, when the problem recurred…and I ran out of the meds…Dr. Lowenstein immediately put in a call to the pharmacy..and made sure they rushed it over…before Javert missed a dose. I’m pretty sure it would have taken longer if I’d gone to a vet practice. Javert is a happy, healthy cat…going into his second year with me…and with Dr. Lowenstein on call, I rest easy. It’s just a great thing to have a vet who makes housecalls…but one this good is priceless ( though his fees are well within reason)
We recently had a very scary experience with our dog during the weekend. While searching for emergency vets in the city I came across Dr. Lowenstein’s page. He had such amazing reviews, I decided to contact him and I have to say that was the best decision I could have possibly made. I am still blown away by how amazing and incredible Dr. Lowenstein is. I have never seen such professionalism, compassion, genuine concern, care, and commitment to care for a patient the way Dr. Lowenstein cared for my puppy. It was truly refreshing to have a veterinarian who was so concerned, patient and willing to take the time to listen and explore ways to make him better without rushing or being dismissive of my concerns. He truly went above and beyond before he even arrived at my apartment, the actual visit was excellent, and the follow up was so thorough. I have never had such a thorough follow up with any healthcare professional the way Dr. Lowenstein followed up on my dog and not just that, he didn’t just dismiss us, he continued to check up on my puppy until we found a treatment that worked. I have only incredible things to say about this veterinarian. I recommend him to everyone, I’m so grateful for him!!!
Addendum, written on August 23, 2020. I am making an addendum to my one-year old review, because unfortunately Google does not let me write a second review. It is so rare to meet a professional with such strong work ethic, accompanied by the the kindest and most empathetic heart. Dr. Lowenstein is one of a kind. He will always return your calls pretty much immediately, even if he is out of town. He will always listen and then give you options, and of course your pet won't have to be stressed by a visit to the vet, because the vet comes to your pet. I recently had a cat with complicated issues, and I don't know how I would have gone through it, without his help, and his guidance. Knowing that Dr. Lowenstein is always only a phone call away gives you such peace of mind, in times that are emotionally very difficult for a pet parent when the health of their friend is deteriorating. I have never experienced this quality of care anywhere. This is precious and priceless for a pet parent. So thank you Dr. L. for once again, showing expert professionalism, together with a generosity of heart and time. Original post from 2019: Dr Lowenstein is the best! He was with me all the way, with great advice and support when my cat friend was diagnosed with cancer. He was able to access his medical record from the AMC almost immediately and provide hospice care (including getting meds delivered quickly) until the decision had to be made to euthanize. Dr Bruce is providing care to the animal with the utmost kindness, patience and a loving heart. He is generous with his time, and professional expertise. He is a rare breed, a truly compassionate human being whom i wholeheartedly recommend, as you will get the best care possible for your pet.
Dr. Lowenstein is a wonderful, caring and compassionate vet. Having him come to my apartment to examine my cat was the best decision I have made in a long time. He took the time to get a detailed description of my cats issues before taking him into the bathroom to complete a thorough exam including taking blood. At my previous vet, I could hear my cat hissing and crying from the waiting room but not this time! Well worth the additional cost which is still very reasonable for NYC. Highly recommend!
In the beginning of the pandemic, when the city had completely shut down, my cat swallowed yarn. It was very late, and none of the vet offices were open or were calling me back. Dr. Lowenstein was the exception. Though my cat wasn’t his patient, he called me back, listened patiently, explained exactly what was happening, and stayed on the phone with me until I understood, in no uncertain terms, that I needed to take her to the hospital that night. He asked only for an update in return. I took my cat to the hospital he recommended and she had an operation in the middle of the night. I am forever grateful to Dr. Lowenstein for his compassion and for saving my cat’s life!
