Description "Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, a privately-funded non-profit, operates this City-owned building as a shelter serving the residents of the City of Manhattan. Programs offered include: pet adoption, stray housing and relinquishment."
Overall just an amazing shelter. We just adopted the most amazing, beautiful cat, Cider. The shelter was clean, very well maintained, and we stayed forever playing and looking at different cats that would be a good fit for our family. I love this place. Thank you for everything you guys do!
I started as a volunteer to offer my photo services to help boost adoptions with professional photos. But I quickly became a volunteer to help outside of pictures when I can. If you like being around animals, this is amazing. (Take the yard shifts, you will not regret it) getting to know the personalities of the animals and helping possible adopters pick the perfect pet for them just makes you feel good. The staff is amazing and will try very hard to match you with the best animal for what you're looking for.
Prairie Paws in Manhattan is an exceptional shelter ran by an amazing Director, Brandon, and marvelous staff members! If I could give them 10 stars, I would! Everyone here is very friendly and they show so much compassion for all humans and animals. Once you walk into their door, they greet you immediately and want to assist you. The staff members are personable and really value their relations with each potential adopter, volunteer, or person that comes into their building. Every interaction that I have had with the employees has been great and I appreciate the welcoming environment they’ve cultivated. While I toured there, the facility was extremely clean and organized. They prioritize proper sanitation, which is vital in keeping the shelter animals safe and healthy during their stay. This is important because often times, animals that enter shelters are in poor health, have no history of vaccination, are under stress, and bring in harmful pathogens. They definitely take measures to support the well-being and health of all of the animals that come into their care. They have a large facility than other small-town shelters I have seen, including a large outdoor area they use for dog play groups. I love that the staff dedicates time regularly to facilitate positive social interactions for their furry friends to reduce chronic stress. Dogs in shelters are often in noisy, confined spaces with limited access to social interaction, but at Prairie Paws, they help prepare dogs for adoption and for potentially engaging in positive social activities post-adoption with these socializing opportunities and interactions with their volunteers. Prairie Paws Animal Shelter also offers a variety of resources for pet parents and potential pet parents! They help them navigate the adoption process and how to get animals acclimated with their new homes with very thorough information using their expertise and knowledge before adopters leave the facility. They also host a variety of events and programs, such as free vaccination clinics, low-cost spay/neuter clinics, and free microchips, making vital pet services more accessible to the Riley County community. They also recently introduced a dog training scholarship to benefit dogs and their families. Their different resources and programs truly help community members who want the best for the pets have the same opportunities to care for them properly. In terms of communication, they are very responsive online via their Facebook page, email, and on the phone. I love keeping up with their adoption board posts online and it makes me happy seeing animals getting adopted out. You can tell that they really care about getting information out to the general public with the frequency of their posts about the strays that come in, the events they are hosting, and the resources they want to share. They are super on top of their marketing and PR, all while delivering the utmost professionalism and compassion. I definitely would recommend Prairie Paws to anyone looking to volunteer there or adopt an animal! Keep up the incredible work that you are doing for this community!
Really nice and friendly! Prairie Paws Animal Shelter makes it super easy and convenient to find the perfect pet to adopt! Purrito is the perfect cat for us and we are happy to give her a loving home!
Love this animal shelter! They do so many amazing things for the community of Manhattan. From doing free microchips before the 4th of July, to the low cost spay/neutered clinics, and other community outreach programs. It's just wonderful all the changes that they've made since taking over for the city.
I fostered some kittens for this group and had a great time. I love that they take good care of their animals and they’re really committed to placing animals in good homes, and try hard to keep pets with their families either by offering training or reuniting pets with their families.
