Pet owners, PLEASE register your microchip on petlink. I found a lost British Shorthair with an unregistered chip, the only way to return it to the family in that case is to contact the shelter. The chip came back to this shelter. However, this pet shelter doesn't have a direct line and only responds to email and voicemail after a bit of time. So, please register the chip on your pet! You never know when they'll run away, and you want to make it easier for a would-be rescuer to get them back to you!
I adopted 2 orangey boys (cats 8-9 month old) on NYE. The staff was really kind knowing we had just lost our senior cat earlier in December and were understanding that my husband and I wanted to come back with our kids to make sure it was a match. They didn't pressure us but we're hopeful that these two idiot litter mates would go together. They were in isolation because they had colds. Every person from front desk, staff, and volunteers cared so much about all of the animals. I can't understate how much care and love everyone put into these 2 dumb strays. All kennels were so clean. Definitely find a friend here.
Found my 3 foster kittens here. Staff was very friendly and helpful! I am in love with my kittens and would highly recommend adopting from here!
I’ve adopted two cats from Norfolk Animal Care and I have volunteered here as well. It’s a great place for adoptions. The staff is helpful with advice about the temperaments of the animals and matching the client with the right fit. It is clean and the animals are well cared for. If you’re looking for a pet, adopt.
This shelter appears to do zero behavior testing to determine adoptability when receiving an owner surrender and will simply take the person's word about a dog being aggressive, and go straight to euthanasia. Recently, someone rehomed their dog to a so-called friend, but within two months, that friend surrendered the dog to this shelter, making a false claim that the dog was aggressive. The friend never contacted the original owner, so when the original owner found out, she frantically called and emailed every shelter in the area. The friend refused to tell her what shelter she dumped the dog at, claiming "It doesn't matter, he's gone." When the original owner finally found the right shelter, the shelter staff who replied to the email showed zero compassion or concern, claiming they euthanized the dog because the owner claimed it was aggressive, so it would not be adoptable. For an organization that has the word "care" in its name, it sure didn't care to see if they could find a way to spare this dog's life.
We recently started a foster to adopt with a dog from this shelter. They made the process in the beginning very easy. Until we had to set up appointments for her vaccinations and spay surgery. They never answer the phone at the shelter and they hardly ever respond to emails. Brought her in for vaccinations, didn’t tell me what they gave her. Also they had to cancel the spay surgery and do it at a different location with no explanation. So I bring her to Chesapeake Humane Society for her surgery and they tell me I have to pick her up at NACC. Okay great, I called CHS to check up on my dog, “we are not allowed to release any information on the dog, you’ll have to call NACC”. THEY ARE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS! THEY DON’T ANSWER THE PHONE OR EMAILS! Also when we went to go pick her up they didn’t put her new microchip in. So we can’t sign the papers to adopt her yet… My recommendation is to just adopt out completely and never deal with this shelter again. This place is so disorganized and are not helpful what so ever.
