This shelter takes such great care of their animals. They truly care about each pet in their care. They have an enrichment program for dogs to ensure they’re staying mentally stimulated. They truly care about these animals going to the right homes.
I expressed interest in a stray dog I found who was malnourished but knew basic commands like “sit” “shake” and “crate.” He had zero issue with our dog the night he stayed with us. I turned him in in case someone would claim him (the legal thing to do). I was told I’d get a call on Monday after Veterans Day weekend. I called that Tuesday and was told bluntly that THEY would call ME when the dog was ready to be adopted after a medical exam. I waited another week and a half before I called again. They euthanized the dog. I asked why and they said he was “aggressive and barky.” Do we put dogs down for barking now? I understand this is a stressful job, but they really dropped the ball when we were trying to help. I will never use their services again.
Had our heart set on a sweet kitten that we were told couldn't be picked up until 6 days later because of a recent spaying. We call on the day she's supposed to be eligible for adoption and find out we had been misled and that she is already adopted. Beware of misinformation at this location and a lack of communication.
The people there have a difficult job, but they need to communicate with the general public and have become part of the problem regarding animal care. They aren't preventative and are quick on the trigger when it comes to euthanization, even if people are willing to help and take the animal. If you have found an animal, if there are kittens, or whatever else, please reach out to all friends for support or a private organization. APS of Durham will euthanize your animal or will put them in a situation to contract a disease. This is coming from someone who volunteered there for close to a year.
This is a great place to find your next best friend. There are so many dogs, cats, and small animals that need loving homes. We had a birthday party and asked all of our guests to bring a bag of dog or cat food, treats, etc. to donate. We filled up our van. We just got through dropping it all off, and they were excited to get it. Every little bit helps! They also need volunteers to help walk dogs, feed and water, bath, clean litterboxes, etc.
Animal "Protection" Society is the most ironic name for this place. They do not protect animals. My partner found the sweetest pup at the park. The poor dog was emaciated, but was still friendly to both him and my dog. This dog was obviously owned by someone before because he was house and crate trained, as well as neutered. We took him there to get him checked for a chip and let them use their resources to help find the previous owner. We left our info and said that if no one came forward that we would like to adopt him. My partner called after that weekend. He was spoken to rudely and told that they would call us when the dog was ready. We hadn't heard anything for weeks, so he called again today just to find out that they put him down. They didn't tell us or try to contact us to save him. They claimed he was barking and aggressive. When you have been starving and alone on the streets and then suddenly in a loud noisy building with strangers, how do you think a scared animal may react? Oh, also they still have his picture on the website even though they've already killed him. TLDR: Don't bring animals here unless you want them to be killed. They have a better chance on the street.
