Well first off I'd like to say that every single person who I had interactions with truly cares about all the animals and it absolutely shows as soon as you step foot in the building. I'm also positive that they do not get the appreciation that they deserve as they are all heroes in my book because these animals just want a loving home and they are trying their best to give them a second chance at just that. Also, I'm sure some people have the wrong impression about what they're doing here and what they're doing is everything they possibly can for the animals. It's a truly different feeling knowing that you're helping an animal in need instead of just going out and getting a puppy or whatever it may be from somewhere and I couldn't be happier about my decision. As far as the adoption process goes, it was fairly simple. You fill out not even a handful of pages for the adoption papers, you have a meet and greet with the animal to test the waters (keep in mind that they are looking for the best fit for the animals and not necessarily just to be moving animals out) and if all goes well you move to the foster stage where they supply you everything that you would need for a month and if for whatever reason it doesn't seem like a good fit, you still have the opportunity to return the animal. (In my case that was not even going to be a question as I knew that I had found my new best friend) Overall I had a great experience and I would encourage anyone looking to add a new member to their family to look no further. Whiskey and I send our love to you all and I can guarantee that we will be dropping in to say hello from time to time.
This is gunna be a long review so buckle in. First and foremost the people here all really care about the animals and the people coming to adopt them, they want the best match for you and the animal. My husband and I were visiting some friends in Toronto when we decided, we were ready to get a dog. After looking online we came across the Vancouver Animal Services website, we went through the application process and met the dog we thought we wanted. We were able to foster before adopting to see if everything would work well. Vancouver Animal Services gave us a crate, bed, food, toys, clothes, lead, all the essentials you’d need for a dog for at least a month. Which is great cause you don’t have to cover additional expenses while fostering unless you want to. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to foster cause even though the dog was an angel at home, on walks he was a handful to say the least. The walks were super stressful because we lived in a condo with lots of other dogs and the one we had was super reactive. After a little over a week we called Animal Services and we were able to schedule a pick up. They picked him up but offered us another dog to foster that they believed would be a better fit for our family, and I’m so glad they did because Winston is such an angel with a great personality and taking him for walks was like night and day. I was still emotionally attached and asked to be updated about what happens to the original dog we fostered and I’m glad to know that he found a perfect home, way out of the city in a fully fenced in yard with a little friend, and he wouldn’t have it if we held on to him. All this to say don’t be discouraged about the process - the application took a little over a month to hear anything from Vancouver Animal Services. Visits are by appointment only so they can be as effective as possible with finding the animals their perfect homes. The fees you pay are really for the medical care the animal gets such as spay and neuter, first shots and a general vet check up. Animal Services ended up gifting us all the supplies they gave during our fostering. So if you're looking to get a dog be prepared for a lengthily vetting process and possible challenges with the new animal in your home but don’t forget The Vancouver Animal Services want you to have a happy home so call them if you need support of any kind and the fees are to ensure all the animals get any of the medical attention they may need.
From the first contact to the last, with the Vancouver Pound, our experience has been nothing but perfection. Please, give them a chance and look no more. They are one of the good ones! We had been looking to adopt a dog for a long time and after many 10 page applications filled out and videos of our home taken and submitted to rescue agencies (without even meeting the dog for that matter!) we were lucky to stumble across the pound. They want you to come and meet the dog first, before filling anything out. Initially, we were looking at a dog in their care that, after meeting, we realized would not have been a good fit. The staff put on no pressure and instead made us feel good about our decision and gently brought to our attention that there was a puppy available that we may find more suitable. We were looking for an older dog but decided to give Georgia a go as their foster to adopt program gave us an out if it did not work out. Also, at the time, we had travel plans that could not be changed so during our absence, they took her back and looked after her until our return. They provide the food, bed, leash etc., and the fee for the dog is incredibly reasonable compared to most, which includes spay/neuter, shots, microchip and adoption fee. The application was was only a few pages, every question we had was answered promptly and every need fulfilled to make the adoption seamless. There is no doubt that the staff there really care about the animals. It has to be a high stress job but every single person encountered was friendly, welcoming and happy for us to have found the right girl and Georgia's reaction every time we went back to the pound for a visit or to get spayed, was of pure joy and excitement, which says a lot. To the administrative staff who welcomed us, to the animal control officers who had kind words always, to the lovely kennel attendants in training, to all of the people we encountered along the way, but especially Rachel, Tracy and Jocelyn, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You're all in the right careers. The animals you help to protect and the people you help to match with them, are better because of you.
These people care about animals. First and foremost, Tracy and Rachel, and I’m sure the rest of the staff but we didn’t have much interaction with them, are committed to making sure their animals are going to a good home. Please be aware that you’re adopting a pet that’s likely gone through some trauma and may need some extra attention. We’re thrilled to have Stella as part of our family after fostering her through a difficult double knee surgery that the pound graciously funded to afford this sweet pup a new life. Please consider adopting before buying, there are unexpected rewards to be had. So much for my no pets on the furniture rule 😅
Thank you so much for the beautiful dog, a special soul and my little buddy. Loved by all that crossed his path. Piper Dog, Aka 'Rolo' from the 'chocolate bar bunch' - Sept 2006 - march 2020. The Most Loyal & Loving Dogs come from the Pound. God bless all that work here to help find loving homes for animals that have so much unconditional love to give.
It's in a weird part of town... right by the homeless camp. Nonetheless, there are great people working there, doing God's work. If you love your pets like I love mine, they are literally saving lives and reuniting families. It's so important to make sure your animals are licensed and wear their tags at all times! Support your local animal shelters in whatever way you can; my Toby has been with me longer than my wife has, and getting him back was priceless.
