Currently fostering to adopt a dog through them. They were great! Informative and patient with us. We are fostering a female dog until she gets over her kennel cough and can be spayed. Then she is ours as long as everything goes well at home! Highly recommend. Animals appeared well taken care of.
I adopted two amazing puppies! Brandywine takes awesome care of their dogs as providing an amazing service. The puppies I adopted came home, healthy with shots, neutered, and micro chipped. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience adopting my two babies.
We have adopted 2 chihuahuas from the SPCA. Both dogs were wonderful pets who became part of our family. The people have always been helpful & friendly. If you’re looking for a pet, check here first. You can go to their website to see the available pets and any specials they may be having. Seniors 65 years and older can adopt a senior pet for free. Military families can adopt an adult dog or cat for free (at the time I’m writing this review). They have adoption and fund raising events throughout the year.
Brandywine Valley SPCA did a great job of informing us about all of their dogs. They gave us quality information to help make our decision a little bit easier. We felt comfortable asking questions and in return, got informative answers. We would recommend anyone adopting a dog for the first time to go in and even just look around! The people there want to make your experience a good one so you can bring a pup home. We are so happy with ours!
UPDATE: After a second call from the COO, the support provided to address their mistakes exceeded my expectations. Mike demonstrated understanding, awareness, and empathy. He offered whatever assistance he could to rectify the situation. Despite the challenges of ensuring the health of my pets over the past month, I am pleased that they took responsibility and initiative to improve not only for my benefit but also for future adopters. While I dislike complaining, my dedication to my pets knows no bounds. Mike ensured that my concerns were heard, speaking to me on a personal level, and I even gained some insights from the experience. Ultimately, we are all human, and animals are animals, so health issues cannot always be avoided. I genuinely appreciate Mike and the shelter for implementing additional protocols, such as quarantine measures, to educate adopters about common illnesses and ensure that these messages are effectively communicated. ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW Caution: Serious Kennel Cough Alert! I recently adopted a lovely puppy from this shelter, and while I'm thrilled and absolutely in love with her, she gave my older dog (Black Lab) a scary case of kennel cough, resulting in hundreds of dollars in vet bills for him. Seemingly healthy with no symptoms, I had no idea she was even carrying an illness! The adoption process was unusually swift and easy. While I appreciate the trust they had in me, I can't help but worry about what might happen if the process is too breezy for the wrong person. The rushed process didn't clearly inform me about the puppy carrying an illness; instead, I received antibiotics "just in case." I signed a paper upon payment, assuming it was for the transaction, not realizing it acknowledged the possibility of illness. Timing was odd for such a crucial document. While I understand illnesses can spread in shelters, daycares, and other highly populated animal areas, I would've really appreciated a very direct warning to avoid risking my older pup. Perhaps an obvious sign or notification of an active illness would have made the message more clear. I've been anxiously caring for our older pup as he's our world, while trying to raise this beautiful pup in an stress-free environment. Regretfully, I failed to read reviews before adopting, and also failed to thoroughly read any paper work handed to me, missing a chance to dodge this nightmare. Perhaps shelter donations could prioritize precautions and sanitization procedures, such as asking for air purifiers, cleaning supplies and equipment in keeping illnesses at bay. I’m excited for the nightmare to be over so I can get back to enjoying our expanded fur family, as I really am in love with the puppy we adopted, but wanted to spread caution to ensure others do their research and look up best practices in keeping kennel cough from spreading in their household before adopting.
We are so thankful to the staff at the West Chester location. They helped us find the perfect puppy for our family. Sampson (formerly Compari) has settled in beautifully. What a great forever friend.
