My nephew was doing yardwork in the front yard yesterday and discovered 3 brand new baby Western Gray squirrels in a debris pile of pine boughs he was cleaning up for me. No nest was built they were just randomly placed there. Could have fallen out of a nest in the 65 ft tall pine tree nearby the pile. We looked and called for the Mama squirrel but she never appeared that night. I contacted the Chintimini Wildlife Center hotline for advice. It was after hours so I left a voicemail. They were so good to text me back and gave me instructions on keeping the pinkie baby squirrels, warm and quiet in a little box. No water or food was to be given at this point. I put some fluff from the old nest that had fallen out of the tree and fluffed up cotton balls in the box to keep them warm and put them in the back bedroom for the night to be safe from our cats. I was instructed to find the baby squirrel sounds calling for a mama video on YouTube and played it near the box of babies under the tree for 3-1/2 hours the next morning. No luck, Mama never showed. So, I knew they needed to be fed and cared for and called the Chintimini Wildlife Center back and asked if they were able to care for these poor babies! They said they would be happy to help them! Yay! Drove down from Salem to their location in between Albany and Corvallis to deliver them for care and feeding. Met a sweet young lady in the parking lot, she was waiting for me to arrive. What a blessing these people are! She said she would get them somewhere warm and give them a health exam and get them fed since they had had anything for at least 24 hours that I know of. Who knows how long the were in that debris pile! I just knew they needed assistance since Mama was missing and never returned even the next day! Hoping the sweet little babies will be cared for by the staff of angels at Chintimini Wildlife Center and be raised to be released some day to live a happy life of freedom! Please take good care of the precious babies and Thank You from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful work that you all do there! God Bless You, All! 😇🙏🐿️🐿️🐿️🤗💞💖
This is the only wildlife rehabilitation facility for native, migratory birds (except raptors), mammals, and reptiles between Eugene and Portland. They have an excellent wildlife vet on staff and have responsible practices. Please donate to them if you can. They care immensely, but cannot always heal every injured animal or find the time/manpower to update people on individual cases. Know that they are doing their best to help each patient in care return to a wild life worth living.
Highly recommend scheduling a tour or wildlife encounter! On our “wildlife encounter tour,” we got to meet the amazing birds of prey (including getting face to face with a lovely little snow white barn owl) this organization is taking care of. I learned so much and was mesmerized by the birds. The Chimintini Wildlife Center is doing amazing work for all sorts of species of wild animals in the area, and by booking a tour you’re not only signing up for an awesome experience and expanding your knowledge of these critical birds, but you’re supporting the center’s work caring for these birds and many more species that may come into the center. All the birds taken care of here are injured or otherwise wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild, so the center uses them for educational tours.
Excellent raptor care happening here - not open to the public, but scheduled tours are available by request.
Called them because a street cat brought an injured bird to the back door. I took in the bird but he needed a little more treatment then I could give it. This place asked me to bring it in and they would even wait a little after closing since I was an hour away in Eugene. They were very kind and friendly. They work by donations so please be kind and help them when you bring an injured bird.
Helping critters, we brought a little Green Heron in who needed some extra help. They are helping her eat right, strengthen her wings and learn to be a Heron. We look forward to her release.
