Description NVADG volunteers, in partnership with emergency services, team up to evacuate, rescue and/or shelter-in-place animals at risk. Our volunteers also get out to Safety Fairs, workshops, animal events and community venues to talk to Butte County residents about how to be ready to evacuate with their animals - large and small.

Recently, when we had to leave our home due to the Thompson Fire in Oroville, I had my hands full (like most everyone else, of course) with 5 kitties, 1 dog, my kids and their non-ambulatory disabled Grandma (who was refusing to evacuate, initially). Once BCSO got Gramma out via ambulance, I was stressing about where to go with all our animals in the 103° weather. After driving around a bit, I got online to check the fire reports & saw that NVADG had set up an emergency animal shelter for evacuees. I had never even boarded our pets prior to this so I wasn't sure what to expect (during our lightning complex fire evacuation, I guess I never really knew that I, too, might be able to leave our beloved pets at a shelter). To my relief and surprise, the location was more than fully staffed (at 11pm-ish) with volunteers who were ready to spring into action and help all of us. After sitting down with a nice volunteer to quickly register all our animals, we pulled into the Sally Port (of sorts lol) and they came to our vehicle and carried our babies off to safety. Whilst doing so, I noticed several other volunteers walking other dogs. Might I add, it was still 90° degrees out and the bugs were swarming due to the floodlights being used at nearly midnight and these folks weren't complaining, just helping! I cannot tell you how much of a relief it was to know our babies were safe & well cared for so we could now find ourselves a place to stay without the worry of trying to sneak our animals in (like we did during the lightning complex fires 😩)! When the evacuation orders were downgraded, we were notified promptly that we could come pick them up, which was great but trust & believe, we were already on our way! Pick up was equally hassle-free, but even more amazing because it was like 106° in the midday and these wonderful volunteers were out there, just roasting in the heat, but still just as helpful & kind as ever. Our animals were none the worse for the wear, except our cats, they were pissed at me for about an hour for making them leave their catio to evacuate but they gave in shortly and I knew they were well taken care of. Just another nice thing I'd like to add; when NVADG closed the shelter, they realized one of our carriers had gotten left behind so they called me to let me know. I simply cannot say enough nice things about these people. Just really great organization. Thank you so much! 🙏🏻❤️😸
This organization is state of the art in animal rescue, emergency sheltering, and evacuation during any disaster.
I don’t understand the negative reviews. Yes, maybe it’s unfortunate that your cats are stuck with dirty litter, but this group acts on emergencies. They’re currently caring for over 500 animals due to the wildfires and I’m sure they don’t have the number of volunteers as they’d like to have. I assume rescuing animals that are at risk of dying takes priority, not to denote the importance of anyone’s pets. I too have cats that I consider children, but I understand the unfortunate decisions NVADG has to make. I can’t imagine this is easy for any of them. Consider that they’re doing the best that they can do under such extreme circumstances. That being said, thank you NVADG for all you do! You’re appreciated immensely.
I give them a flat out F. I was turned away. We are on a evacuation warning. However, because of my winding dirt road is hard to navigate and i only have one way out i dont wait for mandatory. That is far too dangerous. What do they always say... dont wait until the last minute. Go right when they announce the warning. But i guess that is if you dont have animals or have some where to go. I.would gladly rent a motel room but they are all full due to the covid pandemic. Our fed gov was so kind to put all the homeless people in motel rooms. So i will be stopping my yearly donation to NVAD.
Attention cat lovers: Do NOT give this group any money!!! They are horrible!!! They have special permission to enter disaster areas to supposedly care for animals that are trapped or need help because their owners were forced to flee. But that help does NOT extend to cats!!! My sister was forced to flee her house due to the Camp Fire disaster in N. CA., and it took this group four days to get to her house. When they finally got there, they poured some food down, but refused to clean the litter box!! When we begged them to clean the litter box, they said "we don't clean cat litter"!!!! They acted like having clean litter was a luxury for the poor cats!! So the poor cats have been forced to pee and poop all over themselves trying to use filthy litter with feces piled high for nearly a week now. And there is no telling how many more weeks they will have to suffer before their owner will be allowed back in to help them!!!. Anybody who knows anything about cats would understand that providing clean litter is a basic necessity, NOT a luxury!! These poor cats are elderly, and it is doubtful they will survive such extreme neglect. SHAME on this group!!
Thank you for your continuous support by bringing dog food and water to our property on Milsap Bar Rd that was burned in the North Complex fire. We still have hope that our three dogs will be found and are ok.
