I lost my dog of 7 years recently due to cancer and so I’ve been going to animal shelters offering volunteer work to give back to animals who don’t have forever homes. Upon walking in there, I was met by two ladies and an animal control officer who all seemed more interested in speaking to each other than accepting my offer for volunteer work. One woman took down my information after asking me if it was for community service?? Which I felt was a bit judgmental. I’ve never been in trouble a day in my life. Needless to say, I then stated that my dog passed away recently and that I simply wanted to assist other animals with anything they needed help with, even if was just dog walking. The first thing I noticed was the look on the ladies face and the little interest on my offer, the second thing that got me was that she didn’t offer her condolences when I stated my dog passed away which to some may not seem like such a big deal to others, but to me it it was huge. That small interaction formed my everlasting opinion on this place. The unwelcoming atmosphere, the non-existent sympathy, the inch of interest to assist, the larger importance to speak to their fellow colleagues rather than accept a person looking to donate their time and help… it was all just so shocking. I walking out of the building, got in my car, sat in the parking lot and starting looking at reviews only to see that all of the things listed in my personal review are extremely, and unfortunately, very common. I wish I could leave less than one star. Better yet, I wish there was an option to leave a negative star. There was also a large dog in the main room in a cage too small and plenty of objects over the top of her cage. She was a beautiful dog. It’s such a shame to see the little care that the employees seem to have. I personally love animals and am such a people person that I could just not even begin to imagine treating people the way they treated me in the small amount of time. They give the impression that they don’t care, which in their line of work is a huge red flag. I would say I don’t recommend this place, but in all honestly, I’d still suck it up and go there to help the animals because that’s all that matters to me. The animals. The people seem nasty, but I would ignore them solely to help out the furry friends.
I've adopted two dogs from the shelter over the last 14 years. Full disclosure, I do volunteer work there and know most of the staff very well. That said, to provide some balance to some of what I'm reading here. SPECIFIC, EASILY OBSERVABLE DETAILS ABOUT THE SHELTER & STAFF - Fastidiously clean. Always - The dogs and cats there are extremely well taken care of. - Healthy food - Exercise. Volunteers get dogs out for walks daily, cats have a playroom - Veterinary care - Grooming / Flea & Tick prevention The core of the long term staff are former volunteer and pet professionals who, among so many other things, must vet potential adopters. Being vetted means being scrutinized. This is not a retail establishment with requisite effusive, polite behavior on tap. As much as they can, the staff is trying to determine if these animals are going to a good home. That could be perceived as rude, when in fact it's people doing their job, even if that means someone getting their feelings hurt. Pass through this initial gauntlet, illustrate some ability to be a good caretaker of your pet and you'll find you've made fast friends of this staff.
Nothing but animal nappers will sit there and tell you your not in trouble for something but then take your animals away without giving you a chance to correct the situation they shouldn’t even get one star
They took away my friend’s bengal cat because they’re illegal in our area? and for some reason they couldn’t release the cat to him. They sold the cat to some random person in Connecticut because they are “legal” there, instead of releasing them to a friend that he had in Connecticut. The woman who sold the cat proceeded to say that my friend “doesn’t seem fit to care for a cat anyways” when he has been taking great care of his cat for months. Before this incident, he was going through a really tough time in life, and got the cat as emotional support.
Here are 3 of my adoptees. Maybel, Moochie, and Roslyn. Great place to find a great pet.
5 stars all around! After searching and searching for a new addition to our family, we found a dog online that was here at the shelter. We came in on a Saturday and were fortunate to be able to take the dog we were interested in for a walk around the property. The staff (Ann and Debby) were awesome; very relaxed, encouraging us to spend some time with our potential new family member. They answered all our questions, and asked us a few about our home environment and vet. We then arranged a meet & greet with our current dog, which went great! A week and a half later, we came home with our new little girl! The shelter even gave us a ramp, moist food, and a sweater for her. Such a great experience with this shelter; so many shelters should be run the same way this one is.
