A detailed living updated guide on what to expect. About the shelter there are 2 stories. It's co-ed You really want to sleep upstairs as they keep the problem children (alcoholics, methanites, mental issues) downstairs. You will have to try and sleep through people being inconsiderate. Upstairs is quiet. You can't bring your own bedding inside and they don't give any really. No pillows some of the blankets are the size of beach towels. So you are using your own clothing for a pillow. They use a lottery system where they pick a number for you everyday. The lower the better. If you are 20 you are probably going upstairs. If you are 120 you are probably sleeping on the floor with a sleeping bag. Times that I have seen things happen Number selection 230pm-4pm Check in 330pm-5pm Dinner 530pm-6 then again around 730pm Lights out 930pm-10pm Wake up 6am Upstairs people have to be downstairs by 7am. If you have a downstairs bed they will wake you and start collecting bedding but since they don't make everyone go out until 10am you could stay in bed that long if you wanted. Breakfast is inconsistent. Some days eggs Some days nothing. Dinner is consistent. Chicken, pork, veggies and what not They have very limited services between 10am and check in. Bathroom and mail. Sometimes they have lunch packs but you have to ask. Food bank is just down the street and they will give you lunch stuff as well. They have upstairs lockers but only for volunteers and downstairs lockers but only for the night. You have to take your lock with you and your stuff everyday. There are outside lockers that technically have the same rules but they are unused except as garbage cans. They have storage where they will store 1 bag and let you in twice a day briefly to access your bag in there. Not having to carry your pack everyday is a good thing. The staff is extremely polite and helpful. Like I haven't seen any grumpy stuff at all from them yet. They seem like they actually care. I was actually surprised by that. On bad weather days they will let you stay inside all day. On good weather days you are out between 10am and check in. They don't turn people away. You might be sleeping on the floor but you are getting in, if you have behavioral issues (violence) they will either to force you to check in late after lights out Bring a backup Powerbank if you can. Plugs downstairs are extremely limited, plugs upstairs for charging are not. They actually have a charging area up there with a powerstrip. This is a place that will help you and give you a hand up if you are in trouble or will protect you (feed you, give you security and a warm dry place to sleep) if all you are striving for in life is chasing ways everyday to not be sober. It's not a hotel, you will be around active drug addicts, alcoholics and the mentally ill so use common sense around them but I have yet to feel truly threatened by anyone. I met a few people like me who don't drink or use drugs who are there for things like making a few bad financial decisions and/or losing a job. There isn't any housing or job services for single men without income, we don't get assigned our own caseworker like the website says. That may change when the Lantern opens (Google Flagstaff Lantern) I secured an upcomimg appointment with a caseworker for transitional housing after I just found a job but I had to do my own leg work and research, no one told me about it pro-actively. There are also gurranteed work beds in shelter if you have a job. Just talk to the manager.
I'm female and have had to stay here for a couple weeks in the past. Aside from strange alcoholics asking me to marry them during the day, there's not much to complain about. I just wish they actually offered two meals, like their website claims. They actually offer one meal and a snack, but I honestly ate better at this shelter than I do when I'm living on my own.
for personal experience, i would rather not go there at all but in my situation , i go there to shower, even there is very gross but what can the city attorney do about these problems, they are no kinds of rules there. and i don't feel SAFE when i go there.it smells so badly, it makes me want literally threw up. yes..it's that bad
My experience was humbling! Great food, reasonable accommodation(s), saved me! The food was great too! Highly recommend getting on the list for Church! Overall, thank you Flagstaff Shelter Services!
They try very hard not to turn others away, esp.when weather is cold.a zero tolerance on drugs and alcohol,it's a warm place to sleep, even if its on the floor, and get a hot meal.they do their best, and staff is very helpful and considerate.
I had to live here after me and my wife were robbed. It is a homeless shelter and crisis shelter and yes it was hard. Even though I am half native the Navaho still made it hard for me, I am black foot. There was good and bad. I live comfortably now but I still have loving memories from this place. I came to AZ to retire. Wasn't in the cards but that's ok. Miss AZ and Rhiddi
