Description "Our Mission: Protecting wildlife through rescue, rehabilitation, and education."
I found this white tailed tropical bird rolling in the surf, unable to fly, walk, or save itself. I was advised to bring it to the Wildlife Center, which I did as soon as they opened. I hope they were able to help it and were able to get it back to the beach. The other 2 birds were being rehabilitated at the Center while I was there and insisted on getting their picture taken.
This rescue center specializes in wildlife, as it says in the name. Every time I've found a bird or other animal that is injured or orphaned, I have taken it to them, and they immediately assist the animal. They never turn you away, and it's easy to get to. They have veterinarians on staff that will attend to them quickly. You do not have to take ownership of the animal unless you want to and you are not billed for anything. All they require is that you give a donation(of any amount you can contribute). They are a registered 501 (c) 3 non profit organization that has been rescuing animals since 1969!Please be kind when you see an animal (bird, squirrel, opossum, etc) that is sick, injured, or orphaned, and in need of rescue. Take them to the South Florida Wildlife Center! It will make all the difference in the world to them.
I am not sure if they really take good care of the animals. They don’t give any information on how they are once you leave them there. I regret leaving a blue jay I rescued. I should have kept him until he was ready to be on his own. I rescued him when he fell as a baby from a big tree on a road. I was unable to bring him back to the nest. I thought he was going to die but he lived and I fed him and had him on my backyard free on a tree. At 3 weeks we was already flying but unable to eat on its own. Since I was traveling soon, I decided to leave him there so they could teach him how to eat. They did not accept the formula he was eating, they don’t allow you to see where he was going to be. They make you sing a form that you can’t take them back. They could not asure me he was not going to be on a cage. 3 days later I called to see how he was doing and they did not give me any information. I had to send an email and did not get response. I believe if they truly care about the animals, they should be able to give information. They don’t care on how we feel. How would they care on how they are. They should let people see how they are going to be. I feel so sad leaving him there without knowing if he is still alive. I wish I could take him back to my backyard. 😕. They responded finally on this post. Never send me an email back. He was in excellent condition when I left him. He was flying in my back yard. If you see the pictures. He was great. I only left him because he was 3 weeks old and I was going to travel, I did not want him to be eaten by a cat or another animal since he was flying but not high enough. I rescued him falling from a big tree and he was going to die if left unattended. Saying now that I left him in Bad condition is just trying to defend them selves because probably they left him die. I don’t believe on any single word they say. I regret leaving him there.
The staff and volunteers here are truly angels on earth. We have now (unfortunately) had to bring two injured animals to the center and both experiences have been absolutely wonderful. I feel so lucky to have this place nearby and it such a relief knowing that the critters are in good hands. Although nobody wants to hear that some animals are euthanized, it is not always avoidable and we should all hope that every animal gets the best, most comfortable care. Thank you all for what you do!!
Lack of transparency on what they do to the wildlife. I found a baby bird and called and sent an email to them and was told to renest and if that didn’t work to bring it in the next day. We drive 40 minutes just to be told the only thing they could do is “humanely euthanize” because it is an invasive species. Mind you, I had sent a photo of the bird so they were able to identify it before we came in. Why not disclose that information on the website? Why tell me I can bring it in when there’s absolutely nothing you can do to help? The girl who spoke to us in person wasn’t empathetic at all. From reading the rest of the 1 star reviews I’m disgusted to see that this has happened a lot. If you claim to be a wildlife rehab center you should have utmost love for animals. That isn’t evident here.
Welcoming and friendly staff. We found a tiny baby possum and brought it over to them. They explained the process, which included a check-up for injuries or signs of illness. If neither were present, the joey would be raised with other babies until he/she is ready to be released.
