I want to extend my sincere thanks to Maria for taking the time to meet with me and my family several times during the bird adoption process. Let me share a little bit about our experience. First, it’s important to know that you need to make an appointment before visiting. You can’t just drive in—there’s a thorough process in place. After scheduling, you’ll meet with Maria multiple times and interact with a few birds before making your final decision. Once you’ve chosen your bird, you pay the adoption fee and bring a new member of your family home. Throughout our meetings, we learned so much about birds—things we had no idea about! For example, wearing perfume around birds isn’t safe, and certain grocery store flowers can be poisonous due to their pollen. There’s so much more to consider than simply taking a bird home. Maria does an excellent job ensuring that each bird is placed in the right home, and she provides invaluable insights along the way. She continues to share helpful information, like recommendations for bird care and even vet suggestions, which we really appreciate. We plan to stay in touch through the Facebook group. One thing to note—while they are a non-profit, cages and supplies come at a cost, and it’s important to be realistic about the expenses. This organization does an incredible job, and they rely on some funds to continue their work. Overall, our experience was fantastic, and we couldn’t be happier with our new feathered friend!
I am late in posting my review since I adopted in 2020! I really learned so much through the adoption process, and yes, it is a thorough process. After moving forward with your application, multiple visits are required to ensure you're a good match with your new companion. The adoption was delayed due to COVID, but I was finally able to bring home Nina Bonina on September 12, 2020. She actually picked me, and our bond is amazing! Please don't think you're being treated badly because the process is long. Even with the best Angostura extensive education in parrot care, the amount of work can be exhausting! Birds become victims of abuse and neglect, sometimes unintentionally, because the owners weren't prepared. My previous bird experience was very limited, but that didn't prevent Maria and Breanna from educating me and allowing me to adopt a precious Umbrella Cockatoo. Just be prepared to put in the work. They will see your willingness and dedication. It truly pays off when you bring your new companion home.
One of our Conures flew away and he was rescued by papayago and look after for over three weeks until we prove ownership. My mom was supported day by day in the process, my son contacted Maria while he was in Europe and she have options for us to retrieve the information and how to get the IDs we need it for the bird. We felt confident that they truly care to release the birds to their owners and not to make business out of it. When we retrieve Pepe we met the owner Maria, her daughter and of the volunteers Rocio and her son. This place is full of love and care for all these birds that lost their homes. These people are fully committed and dedicated to this animals and they only care for their safety. I haven’t seeing so many unique birds together all well look after. At the same time We brought to them our canary who broke his leg and they look after him with no hesitation while the hospital admitted him for surgery. Without their support by now the canary could also be death. This place is a blessing for all these animals and for families like ours. They make it possible to be reunited back with our pal. Thanks and blessings from our family and Pepe and Piolin. The work you all do only God can compensate it and can only be appreciate it by those who know how complex is to look after animals and provide the best for them without asking for anything in return. Thank you!
Unfortunately I got my hopes up about this place, I should have taken the negative reviews into consideration. Back in August I submitted an adoption application for a macaw. I've known people throughout my life who've raised big parrots. I wanted adopt a parrot. I believe that I was discriminated against when she denied my application after the Zoom call, saw I was black & believed I was poor & lived in the a violent home. I emailed her twice asking for her to call me & I felt that was unfair because I live in a roommate house close to my job for a few weeks. I mentioned being on SSI and she rudely send me a denial email thinking I was poor. Then a saw they had bad reviews on Google. That's messed up because I don't have any issues with money. It's messed up that people are still racists. I ending buying a sweet parrot that's been going well. There's other places you can adopt or buy parrots it's not a big deal.
We love their mission. Too many animals .. especially birds are sold to and bought by uneducated, not thoroughly committed people. Birds are unique and can be complicated to understand and to raise responsibly. Many live decades and will often outlive their owners.. well the owners that are committed and educated to own and raise birds. For the other type of owners or for the birds whose human companion has passed away there are rescues. Not all rescues are equal or good rescues Papayagos is one of the good ones! Unfortunately with the amount of homeless birds and they being the only rescue of its kind in this area they are often overwhelmed and cannot accept/receive surrendered birds. If you are able consider volunteering to help them in person or by giving your donations. It is a worthy cause and an great rescue organization!
I love Papayago! The staff here has a deep love and care for every one of the birds from macaw to each and every budgie! They spend lots and lots of hours here putting in a lot of work to make sure the birds are healthy and happy. They care a lot about the future homes of the birds! I've just started volunteering here and it's been a wonderful experience meeting the staff and especially the wonderful birds here! I'd definitely recommend to adopt here instead of shopping at a standard pet store! The staff works hard to pair the birds up with the perfect home, and they're all so wonderful I would adopt all the parrots if I could!!
