I've had many vets over the years, but Dr Skellenger at Research Pet and Bird Hospital is the best of them all. Highest quality of care and concern. The staff there is also very helpful and always wants the best for your pet. I've been going here for a long time now and will continue to be a client.

We lost our sweet ferret Tiger today and are completely devastated. We rushed her to Pet and Bird because she was unresponsive. Ultimately we think she passed from an infection that turned into sepsis. I just want to thank Dr.Welford and his tech Sarah for being so kind to us when we came in. Sarah even put a sweet sunflower with Tigers body and gave us a paw print to take with us. I don’t usually write reviews but I wanted them to know how much this kind gesture meant to our family.

The techs and doctors at Research Pet and Bird are the best. They are always kind and helpful! I’ve taken my cats and new puppy here. They were so sweet to my shy puppy, he left feeling way more confident than when we walked in! So happy I found a good vet and on top of that, the clinic is so close to my home!

Updated review 10/17/2023: I continue to take my birds for annual checkups and boarding. This time Dr. Tran is no longer there but they were seen by Dr. Wellford who is a great vet all-around. He was knowledgeable and answered / addressed all our questions and concerns. He made sure to explain any procedures or tests when needed (we needed to get some tests done for one of the birds for infectious disease before boarding) and why the may or may not be necessary. He and the vet tech were also very gentle and patient in handling each bird. Front desk staff are also very friendly and courteous. Very pleased with the experience all around. Original review: Everyone there is friendly, professional and knowledgeable. My experience is based on multiple visits with two birds in the span of two years for annual checkups, nail trimming, and follow-ups for concerns. They care about the safety and well-being of the animals. I've had my birds seen by Dr. Skellenger and Dr. Tran. They never pushed any unnecessary tests or medications. I've also had the birds boarded there while I was away for 1-2 weeks and they were in good hands. Positive experience overall.

I’ve been boarding animals here for about 5 years now. The hard working individuals who manage reception are / have been beyond wonderful. Generally, things have gotten less good over time, but this last visit was not good. Most importantly, I am no longer comfortable with the lack of pay transparency for boarding pets at Research Pet and Bird. I’ve been uncomfortable for a while with the immense amount of vaccines and renewal (seems like it ends up being 2-4 vaccines every 6 months); However, I agree to have my dog vaccinated on par with the needs for boarding. This visit the check in form was filled with statements like signing over all responsibility for anything that could happen, saying they can do any treatment they want if they decided it was needed. I did not sign it, I had a verbal conversation last time about these things. Regardless, despite saying I only want things done necessary for boarding (plus a couple add ons I asked for), an expensive wellness exam was done, he was vaccinated three times when he was up to date enough to be boarded without (found out after), and although I was called and asked if I wanted to send off heartworm/fecal testing and planned to discuss it more at the clinic (call was 4 hours before picking him up) — when I got there testing had already been sent off and stuck on the bill. None of these things were mandatory to renew for boarding this visit (up to date, just due soon), perhaps the wellness exam for new bath anxiety meds, despite him being prescribed the same combo for his bath 4-5 months ago. I was asked about none of them despite saying I would like to be called, I say and have said clearly each time I want “just what he needs to board” (and the services I asked for.) The other issue is my dog always comes back very skinny to the point his ribs show. I have tried several things to remedy this — last time I told them he needs more food daily, this time I brought my own food, my own bowl, and gave clear directions to reception, those taking him in for boarding, and wrote them HUGE directly on the bag of food. These directions would’ve maintained his weight even if not followed well. He still came back with his ribs showing slightly. He is also drinking way less water than before (very yellow pee) despite the fact I provide a bowl that will not tip over, and his peeing is now consistently weird in a way I’ve never seen before (pees and then pees just a bit more 2 minutes later while outside — like his bladder isn’t very used to peeing anymore). Lastly, my dog is blind and nervous (hence the meds for the bath) so he requires great trust and is picky about how he is touched. I was told by the vet while picking him up that one of the new women on staff had tried some desensitizing training on him by poking and prodding him a bit, trying to get him to snarl less. This was not an idea that was ran by me. This is the first time they’ve ever done something like this in the 5ish times I’ve boarded him since he was very young. I was hopeful this would be helpful. However, now that he is home, he is not receptive to petting like he was before, much less trusting. He wags his tail much less. He has never come back from boarding acting like this. I’d suggest both new and long term clients request clarification on the check in forms (seems like they go way over bounds and there is no space to specify conditions for signing— like a price cap), treatments necessary to board, and what other treatments they are considering / how much those things would be. I hope Research Pet can be what it once was again sometime soon.

I have had the wonderful staff and vets working with my puppy since I got her! They have helped me through the early months and are kind, nurturing, and helpful! Dr Wellford is great and the nurses and ladies at the desk are super compassionate and efficient! Great clinic!
