I picked up a mom cat and her four newborn kittens a few miles south of me in March 2024. It was really difficult to find a rescue to help me with them, even though I was willing to foster them temporarily, so I was very excited when Living the Dream replied and said they could help. When filling out the foster paperwork, I noted that I could only foster until July (I would be going out of town for work and vacations). I also emailed Donna to make sure she knew that I could only foster until July. She said that would be fine since they would all get adopted by then. Everything was fine for a few months while I cared for the momma and kittens, and two kittens were adopted. Today, June 29, I was asked to take the mom cat back from PetSmart for a break as she hadn't been adopted yet. I politely told Donna I could not, as I agreed to foster until July and no one, in three months, had mentioned that I would need to take the cats back for breaks, and my husband was not okay with me taking the cat back. Donna then snapped at me, grabbed the two kittens that I was still fostering out of my hands, and told me to never contact her again and to get out. Another person (who I believe is the vet tech) told me that that was part of taking responsibility of fostering the cats, to which I replied that I had twice stated that I could only be a temporary foster. My two young kids were with me as I was berated by Donna, and they ended up confused and crying because they never got to say goodbye to our foster kitties. I can't believe we couldn't have just had a civil conversation, and the lack of communication was so frustrating. I have fostered kittens for years with different organizations and I have never been so disrespected. I will not be saving any more stray cats, and I definitely do not recommend this rescue to foster with.
Overall, adopting our new kitty was easy and amazing. However, we were not informed about his underlying chronic diarrhea and nausea/throwups. I am still so happy with out sweet kitty, regardless of his illness. We would have adopted him, regardless. I recommend always asking for full medical history as well as contact to previous foster parent(s), so you can be fully informed before adopting from this shelter. That way, if you have other pets like we do, your other pet is safe. If we would have known sooner, we could have gotten him tested sooner for conditions, rather than thinking it was an “adjustment” issue. We ultimately are still getting our new kitty tested for whatever is causing his illness. Pray we find out what’s causing his GI issues.
I was a foster and was treated pretty poorly. The vet that Donna sent me to was trash, they put me thru a whole ordeal, threw me out of the clinic after treating one of my precious babies like hamburger meat, only to find out 2 of them weren’t even altered! What a joke. I still am really upset at the entire experience. I feel dooped. I did a very good thing, on my own dime, and Donna didn’t even back me up. My entire litter got ringworm from her disgusting house too. Bottom line, don’t foster for her, she’s awful. GO TO A RESCUE THAT ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND IS PROFESSIONAL.
I debated on whether or not to share my story but after reading Quentin's post I felt that I had to speak out. Last October (2022) I adopted two beautiful cats from Living the Dream at the PetSmart on 75th Ave and Bell Road. Penelope was 1.5 years old and Sam was 6 months old. I was suspicious about Penelope's behavior she was so lethargic for a cat that young. I told myself that she was probably just depressed and needed a forever home. Before I left with my beautiful girls the foster parent of Penelope came in and I asked him specific questions about her health. I was reassured that she was fine, just a very sweet docile cat. With that assurance along with the paper you receive saying they have had all their shots, etc. I thought we were good. It became obvious within a couple of weeks that things were not fine. I took Penelope into the Vet. She tested positive for FELV. I was beside myself because I knew that if she had it little Sam was also exposed to this awful virus. I lost Penelope in December of last year (2022). In January (2023) I had Sam tested, she was starting to show symptoms. She tested positive and today I lost her. This has been a heart wrenching experience. Please do your due diligence when adopting a pet and listen to your gut if something doesn't feel right. I wish I would have.
My mother fell in love with a kitten named Frida who she loved at first sight. Upon bringing her home after the first day she was starting to sleep alot and not be very active. We took her in right away to be told she had feline leukemia and would not likely survive. Our adoption papers stated that the mother cat was tested for feline leukemia and tested negative because we were told by the adoption gal that kittems couldn't be tested at her age which was estimated at 4 months old. The adoption agency stated when the kitten came into them she was very sick but they never knew why and she recovered. Our veterinarian said they are able to test as soon as 6 weeks or sooner. As of writing this message our poor kitten Frida has passed away and we are devastated. Beware of who you adopt from and in the future we will be reading more reviews behind the adoption agencies that are so called trusted enough to even be in petsmart. We know we signed the liability waiver and we're happy to pay all the vet bills. But this message goes out to anyone equally hurt by their adoption process with these people.
I adopted a cat from this group with an apparent clean bill of health. A week after adoption, I found out this cat had a long history of severe upper respiratory infections. This was not disclosed to me at the time of adoption. Several vet visits and bills later, I reached out to the rescue asking for help. I was told they had the right medication to help the cat as they had previously treated her for it, how she had to have the right "mixture", and how I should have reached out to them sooner versus going to medically trained professionals. They agreed to take the cat to get her better, however; I recieved an EMAIL the day after telling me the cat had passed. This cat suffered for nothing and if they had disclosured the previous infections and what medications so called worked for her in the past, she might have survived. Do NOT go here.
