Description Border Tails Rescue is a licensed no-kill animal rescue and welfare organization focused on rescuing and adopting stray dogs globally, with a unique focus on Mexico. Our physical shelter facility allows dogs to be viewed daily. We collaborate with rural shelters across the country, including TX, AR, AL, LA, KY, IN, MI, and CACC, Chicago’s open intake shelter. Founded in December 2019 by Harleigh Garcia, who was 20 at the time, BTR is a woman-founded nonprofit registered with the Illinois Secretary of State. We operate entirely on donations and adoption fees.
I’m from Milwaukee, WI. Like many people who find themselves adopting a pet, it all started while bored at work flipping through adoptable pets. I came across the only photo available of my now puppy Mochi’s sister. I had to reserve her for the day and with cold feet I abstained, and she shortly was adopted a couple hours later. I was told she had a brother, named Gravy, who they didn’t have a photo of. I immediately reserved him and left work early to do the 2hr drive to the shelter. I fell in love. but I was so nervous. Caroline was my adoption counselor, and she spent maybe two hours with me talking through all of my scares and worries, pros and cons. I’m a single 30-yo professional. I had just left a serious relationship. I had re enough resources to share and a serious gap in my heart. I had so much love to give. Anyway, it was the best decision I made. The entire staff was cordial and so kind. Compared to the humane society here, they were quick in comparison to finalize the adoption. My puppy had a cloudy eye and their vet wanted to check him over before so brought him home. The outsourced vet where they had his neuter did an amazingly great job—my local vet applauded them. There was some miscommunication with Gravy’s shots but that was because his sister and him look so alike, but the staff fixed it while i was there for a shot visit. My only gripe which it being a shelter and in regards to Illinois’ adoption laws, I wish he didn’t have to get neutered so young as he is a Chow Chow. Regardless, he is loved and healthy and I am so grateful for the staff, Caroline, and the vets. Photos are in chronological order :)
My husband and I did a doggy day out and spent some time with Canelo. He was such a sweetheart and we are so glad we were able to volunteer a few hours of our day here. It is clear that the staff cares about every dog here. They light up speaking about the dogs as we were looking around. While we have not fully committed yet to adopting a dog, we definitely are grateful for the opportunity to volunteer and get to know this organization. Hope to be back very soon!
Border Tails is phenomenal! They take in so many dogs and cats! They also work hard to get them placed quickly while making sure they’re going to a good home. They are very good about getting the animals off to a healthy start through their wonderful vet Isabella. Very good experience adopting our MagPie! (Maggie formerly known as Joy)
My family was so happy to find our newest member. Remy (formerly Elk) is thriving, and we are so grateful to Border Tails for taking him in and giving him excellent care to set him up for success. He had all the vaccinations I would recommend (I’m a vet), fecal testing & deworming, his microchip & was neutered. I was very impressed with his medical care and everyone we worked with was helpful and caring. They made the adoption process easy and we are so happy to have him in our life. Thank you!
We adopted our miniature schnauzer from BTR and we couldn’t be happier. He is a wonderful friend and much loved addition to our home. If you are considering adoption, do not hesitate to visit BTR. With a little patience, some training, a consistent schedule, and lots of bonding… bringing a dog from BTR into your family will change your life! ❤️ Check out our before and after pictures… Don’t judge a book by its cover!
Border Tails is an amazing rescue that goes above and beyond to save dogs from high kill shelters and situations where they aren't wanted. Walking in the door they can tell you about each dog in their care because they take the time out to get to know each one of them and they don't dismiss dogs with medical issues. I fostered 2 dogs from here which happy to say both got adopted. They were always willing to answer any questions I had and provided me with everything I needed to foster and succeed. Please adopt don't shop and visit Border Tails to meet all the beautiful pups they have whether your looking for a senior, puppy, young dog they have them all as well as many different breeds.
