Happy Dog Owner Here. Couldn't be happier with Zelda my Mastiff pup. Nevada Humane Society made it easy to find and adopt.
The adoption side of this place is great, everyone was really nice and informative. However we had to come back to get one of the cats restitched (she licked the wound open) and we were met with rude attitudes and bad service from the vet staff. When we walked in, we didn't know where we were going so we wanted to make sure we were in the right place. We said we were here to get our cat restitched up and the lady behind the counter (who was holding a dog) said "I'm kinda holding a dog, so I can't really take a cat." In the rudes tone. We could obviously see the dog, we just wanted to confirm that's where we needed to be. We then were called 6 minutes before they close that our cat was ready to pick up, when we got there I said they didn't call. The lady at the door replied, again in the rudest tone, that "we did call. We called at five." She then laughed at me when I looked confused. (We looked in his phone log right after this and we never saw a call received at 5, so either they were lying or it didn't go through to our phone). I was in full support of this place until receiving this treatment from ladies who were all old enough to know how to be respectful to people. I'm discouraged from ever going to this place to get an animal again. Poor communication skills from the staff, and rude attitudes for no reason.
I have never in my life been treated this poorly at any business or establishment whose job description is to “care”. I got a phone call from an elderly church member saying two kittens needed to be rescued from an apartment in Reno. She was related to the person that dumped them. Apparently something happened where the people staying at the apartment had to evacuate immediately per law enforcement. I have NO IDEA what happened exactly and I didn’t ask for much info. I was just transporting abandoned homeless kittens NHS. I arrived and was told by a heavier set woman with dark hair (ponytail) there were several stipulations for taking in the cats and my reason didn’t fit the criteria. THEY WERE FILLED TO CAPACITY. I tried to present a valid case of why they should be taken in and never again will I do that. I was put on trial by this lady who was clearly miserable and needs a raise. It was suggested that I was lying because I couldn’t give detailed information surrounding the abandonment of these poor kittens. I even provided the phone number and name of the person whose cats they are and asked her to kindly call her. The employee reluctantly called and got the persons voicemail which is why I was here with the cats to begin with. This “loving and caring” employee suggested I put the cats outside and I asked her if that was lawful and she said “Cats are free roaming”. I didn’t know this but I don’t have the heart to do that to them. I inquired about the coyotes because we have them in Storey Co and she replied they were everywhere. She agreed to come out to the car and scan the kittens with no success and proceeded to tell me with condescension to make sure I run my air conditioning because it was getting hot in the car. I left the windows down for the kittens. Why in heavens name does this person care about air conditioning for cats when you just told me to dump the cats outside? And who doesn’t run their air in the car when it’s 100 degrees? If this employee doesn’t like her job, then she should quit. People are stressing for various reasons but that is no reason to take it out on others.
I got a wonderful kitten from here in October of last year. His name is Felix Beard. My grandson wanted to visit again. It is a great place to visit. Very clean and the staff are welcoming.
My escape artist Belgian Malinois got to visit for a couple of hours. The staff was kind, courteous and helpful.
I've adopted many animals over the last 30 years, most from shelters like this or private facilities. I have never had an experience as good, from the first moment to the last, as the experience I had at this shelter. The staff was consistently friendly and empathetic, interested in helping me find the right pet. More than just parroting back what I was saying to them, they made helpful suggestions and suggested dogs I might not have otherwise considered. One of those dogs is my new best friend, Boone. The facility was remarkably clean -- a low bar, I know, but it's surprising how many animal shelters aren't that way. And the animals, it was clear, loved the staff that they were dealing with. The adoption process was straightforward, no one made me feel like a criminal being grilled by the police (also something that happens at a lot of shelters during the adoption process), and the whole thing was quick. I really can't recommend them highly enough.
