Description Founded in 1889 by J. William Sayre, the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) is a 501(c)3 organization solely dependent on private donations, grants and community support. We receive no operating support from the government or national animal welfare groups, including HSUS or the ASPCA. Among other things, LHS is the largest pet adoption agency in Central Kentucky, we educate the community on responsible pet care and the compassionate treatment of all animals, and we spay/neuter the pets of qualifying families at a low cost. Simply stated, we Give Love, Teach Love, and Adopt Love.
We already knew we wanted Penfold from the moment we seen his picture. The staff was amazing, kind, and supportive. Shoutout to Chad W. For helping us pick our forever baby boy. He told us he had a feeling about this one and he couldn't have been more right. Rescuing a dog is the greatest gift you'll ever receive because their love is unwavering. Adopt today, it's worth it. You can even foster and the staff is very knowledgeable about everything you need to know. Go see for yourself.
I adopted a pitty from LHS in 2016, and he passed in 2024. I decided to go and walk around LHS 3 months after not really expecting a miracle of any sort. I ended up meeting and taking one of the sweetest pitty dogs on a check out day on a car ride to the park, and the next day I adopted him. LHS has changed a lot over the years expanding their growth. They have more buildings, more outside areas for the dogs to get fresh air like the Henry Houses etc and the enrichment they provide these pets at the adoption center show. Even the treats on the cage for “feet on the floor I get a treat and tell me I’m sweet” is the best. They even work to get dogs to have basic training and commands while waiting for homes. Every singe dog in that center was at the cage door to say hi, every cage was completely clean, and all of the dogs looked healthy, happy, and had weight on them while waiting for their forever homes. The staff was in the kennel area constantly cleaning and filling waters etc the entire time I was in there looking at dogs. The front desk adoptions staff is also amazing and works to provide you with so much quality information on the dog you are getting plus coupons and codes to get supplies is a huge perk. From the kennel staff to the front desk staff, everyone was super amazingly sweet, informational and professional. Please please PLEASE consider adoption as the shelters are full to the brim and these pets end up being your soul companions if you just give them a chance. I will always recommend and support LHS. Thank you all for all you do with the smiles you have on your faces because your jobs are not always easy!
We visited the humane society in November with the intention of adopting two dogs. That is challenging as you don’t know their personalities and how they might interact. We met with a few dogs and found two that we loved. Unfortunately, we had an unsuccessful meet and greet between them so we had to go back to the drawing board. The staff was extremely patient and was really trying to help us find a perfect pair. We were there for three hours and were about to leave with just one pupper. At checkout a staff member said they had a dog upstairs that was going to be released from the hold that day. He had gotten his “name” just a few minutes earlier. At their suggestion, we met Cooper. As Cooper rounded the corner my husband immediately said “He’s so fluffy!”. When Cooper burped in his face I knew he was going home with us. Their meet and greet process worked wonders as the staff was correct about a good placement with Cooper and McKenna. We are so happy and blessed to have these cuties in our lives. Thank you for helping people “adopt love”!
We adopted Shaggy, a fox terrier mix, about 5 years ago from PetSmart, which gets their animals from Lexington Himane Society. He was an older dog and had a heart murmur when we adopted him. About a year or so after he passed away, we decided to adopt another dog. They had a $25 adoption fee weekend! We'd been wanting a new dog but just didn't need to spend a lot. We looked and checked out a couple and found one we liked. They were very courteous and answered all our questions. Unfortunately, an issue with our landlord caused us to have to return her. We were broken hearted. I hated the thought of her going back, but we had no choice. When my husband took her back, to his surprise, she seemed like she was going home. She seemed very happy to be back... we were comforted in that she wasn't distraught while praying she finds a good home. They talked with my husband and they were very kind, understanding, and comforting. They were very busy and there was a wait - she got very excited and wanted to get inside. They were very understanding of our situation, which was much appreciated.
I have both fostered and adopted through LHS. I got my sweet baby, TC back in 2018 and he’s just been the greatest little (big) kitty. I also recently adopted Jackie (previously Spinelli) and she has been the absolute best addition to my little family. She is incredibly cuddly, intelligent, eager to please, and always so goofy. Please consider LHS for your next family addition. The staff has always been kind, helpful, positive, and encouraging.
There were so many good dogs there! If I had a farm I'd take every one with me. You can volunteer and take dogs on a walk. Eventually you can take them outside the gates. They need the love. And food. Please help out of you can.. its the best free thing you can do. Makes a for a good date idea.. or family trip idea. Alot of the ladies there know the dogs and their behaviors so they can pair you perfectly.
