Front Street animal shelter is a really nice and animal shelter with many animals that need a loving home. The shelter has been in Sacramento for many decades. They have a really nice fenced off area where you can get to know a dog you're interested in adopting. They have a very nice cattery where you can see all of the cats that are available for adoption or upcoming for adoption. You scan a QR code for any of the animals that you're interested in adopting and somebody comes to meet you. You're able to ask more questions and able to get to know the animal one-on-one. I highly recommend looking here if you're looking for a family pet. They also run great adoption specials and free vaccination clinics. For example, this month until October 31st you can adopt and then don't count for $5 and a kitten for $25.
Great staff! Great programs! I am so grateful the city has this place. I found a dog and took her to the shelter to see if she was microchipped. She was! The owners number was no good so I decided I would foster her. Not sure why the owner would not try to find her. She's a great dog! If anyone is missing a husky mix she is in great hands. The shelter has my info if you want her back, but I think I will adopt her.
I adopted my cat last year from front street as a designated feral “garden cat” with the plan of making her a new buddy with my indoor/outdoor adopted feral garden cat, but she was actually never an outdoor cat. She was from a hoarder home situation. I was thrilled to make her part of our home, but I wasn’t thrilled that she had her ear tipped for no logical reason. My mom was calling her the “closet cat” for the first few months, because she didn’t want to even come out of that. Now she is a “velcro cat,” as you can see in this picture. She’s 100% indoor and gets along with her indoor buddies. I even attempted to let her out a few times. Nope! Please don’t ear tip cats from hoarder homes.
I had went through a traumatic situation with my dog in March & due to unforeseen circumstances we had to put him down.. sooo. In May, we decided to go to Front Street, and the moment I saw this beautiful girl.. I knew she was ours. I am so thankful to have met my fur baby, at Front Street Animal Shelter.. A couple days into fostering her, she was throwing up, wouldn’t eat, and eventually had an emergency surgery due to an intestinal issue & then spayed at the same time. She made it through with no complications, and ever since.. healed very quickly and nicely. After that, she was OFFICIALLY OURS. Since then, she has filled out, hair grew back, and so so easy to train. She is amazing. So thankful for the help we received.
It is with a heavy heart that I write a negative review for this place. My daughter had to put her three-year old cat down today which she adopted (along with another cat) from this facility three years ago. He suddenly became extremely ill a few days ago and a few thousand dollars later, he was diagnosed with end stage feline leukemia. Had my daughter been aware that cats at this facility are not tested for this highly communicable disease, she would have either passed on the cat or still taken him (he was the best) and gotten him the follow-up care he needed to extend his life if possible. Now she has to worry about whether her other cat will succumb to this horrible disease. At the very least, she should have been made aware of this condition. I contacted the shelter today and they confirmed that do they not test for this disease because of the high rate of false positive results. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this. The way these cats are crammed together at the shelter, it would be a miracle if they didn't contract it from another infected cat. They can be born with it, get it from their nursing mother or the saliva of an infected cat through mutual grooming. Just beware. All of my cats were obtained through adoption agencies who routinely check for this disease. This whole situation has devastated my daughter and the shelter needs to be do better at educating people before adopting out their cats.
Found the sweetest rescue there. The staff was really helpful throughout the process. The animals all seem to be cared for. This is our newest addition.... Chomp.
