We had an intestinal emergency with our 15-year-old dog, and could not be happier with the compassionate and professional treatment all around, from front desk staff to Dr Avila. The clinic has a lovely atmosphere and a steady hum of people who know their business. We live out of town, so it was a huge relief to find a local vet who could treat our sweet boy!
I have been taking my Poodle to Smith's for the past 3.5 years. This most recent visit he was attended by Dr. Breer and Nurse Patty. I have to say this was the absolute best visit to the vet ever. They explained everything and gave valuable advice with great attention to detail and recommendations regarding my dog's health. I even got a follow up call to inquire of his progress. Simply amazing service!
My wife and I have been taking our pets to Smith Vet since 1991 and we loved everyone we interacted with. My wife has been taking her pets to Smith since the 60s. But, since the clinic was sold it has been a very frustrating process to get our pets in for normal pet care. In the past 5 attempts we arrive and are told, “to busy come back when we are less busy.”. When we ask when that is we are told call ahead. But, no one answers the phone. The website says they take appointments, but it turns out only for surgeries. So, as of today we are looking for another vet to take our pets. It’s sad to see Smith as it is today.
We were very grateful for the compassionate professional care that our dog (and we) received from Dr. Wilcox. Dr. Wilcox is a wonderful practitioner as well as educator. She had a kind centered presence even as she delivered unexpected and anxiety-provoking news about our dog's health... and provided a clear way forward in terms of treatment options.
Smith's is a large veterinary practice here in Santa Fe, and they provide quality care despite a huge case load and shortage of vets (a national problem). They are essentially the only source in Santa Fe for emergency treatment for pets on a daily basis. Otherwise you'll need to drive to Albuquerque. Good luck with that! Yes, you can only make wellness appointments, and for anything else you show up, check-in, and wait your turn. Sometimes this can be an several hours or more. Most of us understand this and wait patiently for our pet's turn. If a critically ill animal is brought in, they treat that dog or cat right away. They have treated all five of our cats during the past18-20 years. These were all older, rescued animals. When the time came for them to pass way, the vets and vet techs were there for them and us, sitting with us during the last few minutes and giving us much needed emotional support. This is an outstanding practice, doing excellent work. On a recent trip in with our 17 year cat , Sierra, Dr. Yzeta d Avila and her vet tech could not have been more helpful which has been the case with the many vets we've seen over the years. Not impressed as I tried to set up care establishment appointment (relocating to Santa Fe) and was told there are no appointments. I have worked with a number of good vets and this does not bring confidence in their professional capabilities. I understand triage of pet emergencies but the staff should be able to schedule routine appointments with flexibility and room for pet emergencies and triage.
