Description King Street Cats is a unique cat welfare and rescue organization. We are privileged to have an orphanage to house our cats safely until they are re-homed. We are a true no-kill, free-roaming cat orphanage and we pride ourselves on having the "cat-friendliest cats in town." We are run solely by volunteers and are funded by private donations.

I read a lot of comments that the volunteers were rude, but I have a personal opinion that they are not rude but they are firm, they know what they are doing, including implementing their SOP. The key is that you don't get confused and know how to behave. I had to make 3 appointments until finally I was sure of the choice of cat I would adopt. I adopted 2 beautiful cats from King Street Cats. Their documents are complete, vaccines are complete, they gave me spare food for 5 days, a bag for my cat Carrie and some of my cat's favorite toys. I love what they have provided for adopting cats.
Small local non-profit shelter dedicated to helping felines of all sorts. It's understandable why some people may have negative experiences here but also important to understand the context. It's very important to note that cat welfare is not the same as it was 10 or 20 years ago. King Street cats advocates for a high quality of care, no kill, indoor only cats that can go to appropriate housing. Cat should not be outdoors unless fully supervised. There are implications to outdoor cats that have negative effects on people, wildlife, and the cats themselves. I would expect some of the prospective adopters with more legacy views on cat welfare to have had bad experiences here. The volunteers, mostly ladies, are very caring for the cats and have their interests in mind first. Being all volunteer, it can be overwhelming but they put a lot of dedication into it.
Unfortunately I should have read the Google reviews from fellow community members before getting so invested in the idea of adopting from KSC. It’s been over 2 months since I visited the shelter and sent in my application via email in which I never received a response. I thought this was a technical blip so I reached out on Instagram DMs as well as in their comments (because they seem to be actively posting on there) but received ZERO response. Come to find out from the reviews that they only adopt to Alexandria residents? Not a single mention of this when I met with the volunteers in person. I am now starting to believe that this organization is a weird front for some sort of fostering pyramid scam as 70% of the cats in their shelter (THAT ARE DEEMED ADOPTABLE ON THEIR WEBSITE) are in fact not adoptable and instead referred to as permanent KSC cats. So weird and such a misleading business.
First off, these one star reviews make no sense to me. Went in person and met some of the cats. One of the volunteers introduced us to Gavin and we really liked him. Filled out the application and came back to pick up our cat two weeks later. Had a great experience and have been able to email KSC any time we have questions. Considering going back soon to get a second cat.
I applied to adopt a cat here they said come in and talk to a coordinator. I delayed because I wanted to meet the cats before adopting them and. 2 days after i met the cats they said we have no cats for you go somewhere else with zero explanation. I requested an explanation a week ago via email and have recieved no contact
King Street Cats is a unique shelter in that it is cat-only, free-range, and 100% vounteer-run. I first heard about them at Shirlington's Whiskers & Wags event. This event was mainly catered to dogs but I was happy and surprised to see kittens out and about. I took some information on their shelter and saw them again later at a local pet store. Each weekend they take different cats to different pet store and shops around the area to raise awareness about their shelter. In addition to their "mobile" cat, they have little 'speed-dating' type profiles on all of their cats that are currently at the shelter in a binder that you can flip through. They also have a lot of information on their website and Facebook page. After losing my first cat in January 2016, I visited King Street Cats to talk to the volunteers and see what type of cat would be a good fit for my husband and I. I had my eye on Pickle, a popular striped grey cat, but I saw another cat nearby that pulled at my heart strings. Patrick had been rescued by Baltimore County and when his time was up, transferred to King Street Cats. He was incredibly attentive and playful even though he had just come off the streets and been transferred. We visited him several times over the span of a few weeks during open house hours to form a bond with him and get a feeling of his personality. Once he hopped into our laps and licked our faces, we filed an application for him. A few days later we completed the paperwork and were about to bring him home! Patrick (now Rémy) is now a real part of the family. He helped our hearts heal after losing our first cat to illness suddenly. King Street Cats handled all of his micro-chipping, vaccinations, neutering, and even treated him for some stomach parasites he picked up while on the streets. They are really thorough and care about the cats FIRST and foremost. Finding the perfect match for a kitty is of utmost importance to them. Thank you King Street Cats!
