Awesome people doing the community of Amarillo a very good service. I adopted a cat from here and they were very informative and helped me through the whole process. They have an awesome 'Foster for a Week' program where you can host a pet for a week to see of they are compatible with your living space, which was very cool. Pic provided is the cat I adopted, Handsome Boy
Only reason its getting 2 stars is because I got an amazing dog here. As much as I love him and love that this is a no-kill shelter, this place has a ton of issues. -Front desk lady (Deb? Debbie?) was so rude. Acted like I was interrupting her when I asked about the dogs I wanted to adopt -There were no less than 4 free roaming dogs in the front desk area. Along with the 4-6 workers (one in a wheelchair) that were just sitting and talking, there was no room to even approach the front desk. I had to yell over the dogs and people to even ask my questions -They NEVER answer the phone. When I was there it rang off the hook and no one even attempted to answer it -When I did find a dog I wanted to adopt, there was no one in the kennel area to talk to. Had to go all the way back to the front desk to yell over everyone. -The forms they gave me were copies of copies and were so hard to read I had to ask for help. Deb treated me like an idiot when I asked for help. -Someone came in looking to drop off a lost dog and the fat bald guy told them “we’re full”. They WERE NOT full, they had several empty kennels -Parking lot is so small that I had to park across the street. Pretty nerve racking walking a brand new dog across a busy street to leave Whole experience was stressful and irritating. I DO NOT RECOMMEND
Zero if I could. the old man and the young lady in the wheelchair are so rude right out the gate. I had not so much as said hello yet. Based on the other reviews, others appear to have issues with these two jerks as well. Maybe I should have read these first before bothering. Also, this location is NOT affiliated with the national ASPCA organization, misleading at best. The dogs are sick, fat, or even both. A few dogs have been there YEARS. donate somewhere else, adopt somewhere else.
Very small office and very smelly is my initial impression. No employee/volunteers wearing masks. CDC recommended 6 feet spacing was impossible. Looking for a small dog. There were approximately 10 dogs in another small room. Again, 6 foot spacing not possible. The best looking small dogs had “adopted” tags on the cage already. One long haired dog needed grooming badly. Another old dog looked like they were teetering on death’s edge. Not Covid safe and a waste of time to drop in. I recommend calling and get all info first. Do not arbitrarily drop in. Four parking spots. No handicapped. Only other place to park was a ditch.
We applied to a few rescues looking for a large dog to be my ESA. I didn't get an answer back from any of them probably because we live in an apartment and I have a tiny Chihuahua. The staff at the SPCA are friendly, the facility is clean and all of the animals are well cared for. The adoption process was thorough but not super difficult. The big boy in the picture is coming home with me in a couple weeks!
Very nice people. We got my son a cat and the adoption process was very easy.
