Disappointing Experience at Safe Haven for Cats We recently visited Safe Haven for Cats to consider adopting a third cat, but unfortunately, the experience was far from welcoming or positive. When we arrived, we were met with confusion, as the staff seemed unprepared for visitors looking to adopt, despite it being a Saturday at a cat shelter. We were asked if we had filled out an adoption form and explained that we had adopted from this shelter nearly eight years ago. However, we were informed that they do not keep records beyond six months, which seemed surprising in this day and age. After completing a new adoption questionnaire, which included several unusual questions, we waited nearly 30 minutes before being allowed to meet the cats. The process of meeting the cats felt overly restrictive. We were personally escorted through the shelter and introduced to each cat, but the staff treated us as if we had no prior experience with cats, despite us mentioning that we already have two. Whenever we expressed interest in a cat, the staff would hold the cat themselves and only occasionally allow us to pet it. There was no opportunity to interact with the cats in a more natural or meaningful way, as they no longer allow visitors to sit or play with the cats in a designated area. Additionally, we were required to sanitize our hands repeatedly, which seemed excessive and likely contributed to the cats being less receptive due to the strong scent of the sanitizer. While we understand the importance of hygiene, this felt counterproductive to creating a comfortable environment for both the cats and potential adopters. The overall experience left us feeling unwelcome and undervalued as potential adopters. Unfortunately, this was a stark contrast to the positive experience we had at this shelter years ago. For those considering adoption, we would recommend exploring other options, such as the Wake SPCA, which offers better pricing, service, and treatment for both patrons and pets. PS - this place seems racist.
Adopted our baby on our first visit to Safe Haven 4 Cats after running around the town and visited other adoption centers over 6 times. We had to wait for 45min before entering, and the wait was so worth it. They do it so cats don’t get overwhelmed by the crowds and they make sure you can take your time and have opportunities to play with the cats. Vicky is extremely helpful and sweet, she introduced every single adoptable cat there and you can just tell that she loves every single of them. She knows their personalities, she knows how long they have been there, and she answers every question you have about each cat. They set up play rooms where you can meet the cat, you get sanitized before entering the room. They taught all kittens so well, you just know that they are loved, and they are affectionate towards humans. After visiting almost all shelters around Raleigh area, I would say I had the best experience here. Not to mention you can bring your baby home right after deciding to adopt them, the whole process is smooth and fast. Vicky stayed overtime for us since we were the last visitors, and we really appreciate her patience and everything this shelter has done to help those angels🐈🐈🐈
My daughter adopted two cats from this awesome place. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and love cats 🐈 😻. There is a lot of paperwork to fill out but rightfully so when you are about to adopt a little fur baby! However, once you finish the paperwork and are approved your paperwork is good for 6 months, I believe. If you are looking to adopt a fur baby Safe Haven for Cats is the place. The pictures are of 2-year-old Tea on the right and 6-month Ren on the left.
If you’re not white, don’t waste your time here. They treated us like we were intruders or suspects as soon as they opened the door. We felt unwelcome and overly surveilled as if we were there to steal the cats. No one deserves to be treated like a second-class citizen, especially when trying to adopt a new furry family member. I will never return, which I’m sure is what they prefer. Sad.
I had a great experience! Last weekend I was super bummed out because every where I visited kept making me jump through hoops to even POSSIBLY adopt a fur baby. One place even told me the process takes weeks because we had to set up a meet and greet and they needed to call all my references to verify everything first and so the cat I wanted wouldn’t even be available. I really wanted to adopt a cat that may otherwise not get a home instead of buying a cat so I finally ended up here. Staff was super accommodating and let me see the cats that very day. They knew all of the cats individually and were able to tell me their individual stories and talk to me about their personalities. You could tell the cats were loved and are also socialized often because of how sweet they were. I ended up finding a cat that I absolutely fell in love with and was able to take him home that day. They were also kind enough to lend me a carrier because he was a hefty boy. I 100% recommend this place.
My wife, I and daughter made an appointment. We get there and fill out the papers and go to the back, many different cats in cages. We chose the oldest resident, he was 5yr old and he was our new cat. It took 2-3 months for our cat to relax, now he is my wife's best friend. BTW our daughter is very autistic, no one said anything about her being abnormal and she was allowed in the cage with the cat for at least 30 minutes.
