Description Chartered in 1934, the Animal Defense League is a non-profit organization that is a true no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for these animals by providing needed medical care, including spaying and neutering. Food, shelter, and safety are also provided – along with compassion and attention. While maintaining a healthy and loving facility, ADL consistently works to find the best possible home for each resident animal.

Rachele led me and my dog, Comfort, through the process of finding a friend for our dog. We were introduced to a couple of dog and children friendly adult dogs. We spent time with them to see if personalities meshed and I took the most friendly for a nice walk. After we picked out Little Debbie who we renamed Harmony, the paperwork was completed to register her under our family and we brought her home.
Some how we ended up with the greatest dog in the world! She was just meant for us. This center is one of a kind. They take such loving care of their animals and go the extra mile. The staff was the best too. Thank you for our new family member Ladybug. *Update: I don't know how she found her way to the shelter. She knows sit, stay, shake, lie down, drop it, leave it, wait, and is house broken! Whomever had this dog and for what ever reason you had to give her up, I want you to know she found a loving home.
No kill shelters are dear to my heart. We adopted this gorgeous male chocolate lab during their 4th of July few free adoption promotion. Knowing that institutions like HEB subsidize this place and help further their mission makes me proud to have selected them as the spot to get our new family member from.
The friendly and knowledgeable staff are very helpful and understanding. We've fostered a dog and adopted two cats from this location. Every interaction has highlighted that the staff here care about the well-being of these animals. I would definitely recommend this place for adoption or fostering an animal. If you have to surrender your animal for some reason, know that it will be loved here.
Pets are a bond, commitment to love and take care of an animal for the rest of their life. I spent over an hour and a half there with my current small breed. Looking for a match for her and me. Mostly her. Didn't find a dog after several staff suggestions. She had a cat brother and looked in the cattery about 545 for another staff suggestion. Immediately a wonderful little furball came running up, no others did. I picked her up and she stayed content for at least 20min. Perfect energy, so loving just purred. The staff watching my little dog. I asked to introduce them and they went nose to nose with no hiss or bark! Perfect! I'm in, told them we would take her. It was a little after 625? They said we stop adoption at 615! Said it takes between 30-45min. Surely after all that time and bonding we could stay a few minutes to give a forever home? They said no. By then we were at the front and it was 630. I could come back tomorrow at 11. I told them I worked until 4. I would fill out paperwork and pay the fee now for a pending adoption return to do whatever else takes 45min. I didn't want to lose this opportunity after so much time and bonding. They said no holds can't pay or do paperwork until day of adoption, I would just have to take my chances! Seriously? That's the deal? How about we volunteer 15 extra minutes to give this cat a great home with another pet companion!? I reached out at 130p today, still available. At 330 ready to come get her! Still available? Yes... Out the door! Telling my little girl I would be back with her sister cat! Then, the next text, wait, no...adopted, but we have another similar male? Again, not just interchangeable with any old one you want to get out the door! Very disappointed in the staff member who didn't go the extra mile for the pet or the family who was there first and committed to providing a home. It was like, we have to clock out in 30min so just take your chances tomorrow! I am disappointed in you for not taking the 30minutes available and making it happen for the one who made a commitment to the purpose of this shelter. Could not be more upset about how little empathy and consideration you showed. Not all staff, but he knows who he is. 15min you never mentioned broke hearts. You could have done more to help with that investment.
Went there today to look at potential adoption possibilities. I was very impressed at the cleanliness of the facilities especially in the buildings 11 & 12. The staff in there were super nice and helpful. So much so I took the time to get their names. Jordan, Cheryl, & Ashely, all made the visit very easy and enjoyable. Saw several adorable puppies, and the animals even looked well kept which isn’t always the case in shelters. All in all very confident and comfortable going forward with adopting from here
