This place is the best. We have been coming here since we moved to the area in 2020, and they feel like family to us now. They’re great with both our dog and our cat, but most of all they just make it easy to take our animals there. They work us in when we have a sick dog and they have a cancellation, they are affordable, and they never push anything at us. Carrie and Rebecca in the front office are the best, and the doctors and techs are so kind and loving to the animals. If I lived 2 hours away, I’d still come here.

I took my 15 week old english bulldog puppy in for a visit as he needed remainder of his shots and a check up. The staff worked with me to ensure my pup got exactly what he needed. Everyone on staff was amazing, knowledgable, and personable. So happy to have found a vet for my boy. He received so much love while there and anyone looking for a place to take their animals...THIS IS IT!

Let me preface this review by stating this is based strictly on my experience. My dog became ill on 5/6/24. I wasn’t able to get an appointment with my primary vet; so I called to see if they would see me. The staff were very accommodating and able to work me in same day which was great. They performed an exam, X-rays, and bloodwork for about $500 and informed us they feared there may be a foreign object lodged in the abdomen. So they gave fluids and advised we come back in the am to see if anything would pass overnight (it didn’t). We came back the next day for drop off and later received a call from the “surgeon” who talked us through what they were thinking needed to be done etc etc. we agreed, believing this exploratory surgery would find the issue. Surgery completed @ a cost of $2,700 (sent home on antibiotics) and we were told some fabric material was removed from the colon but it wasn’t saved for us to see. The communication was good, and we brought our dog home to begin recovery. Fast forward several days and no improvements…so we bring him back for a third drop off on 5/13. Unfortunately, this is where communication starts to drop off. We had to call about 15 minutes before the close of business to find out if our pet was being kept or we needed to pick him up. Keep in mind this is only our third visit. When we asked, we were emphatically told “we don’t keep animals overnight, you must pick up”. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have a call earlier in the day with this being only our third visit. After paying another $450 bill We talked with the vet who indicated that it still feels like something in the abdomen… this is a bit alarming considering surgery was just completed to remove an object or so we thought. Mind you our dog hasn’t eaten for over a week now at this point. Since they don’t keep pets overnight we go home and are instructed to bring him back in the morning for further observation. Later that evening, based on our own concerns we decide to take our dog to BetterPet Urgent Care which turns out to be the best decision. Great people and they seem to really care. As we are checking in there are numerous questions such as “why did they prescribe antibiotics?; why did they do an enima?” Which raised a few concerns and some questions of our own. We met with the BetterPet Vet who within an hour was able X-ray, do bloodwork, and an exam and advise that if it was her dog she would go to an emergency vet to get an ultrasound as she believed there was a foreign object in the abdomen and a second surgery was needed. So, they called for us and we went and our dog successfully had a second surgery removing a cat toy he had chewed. I’m leaving three stars as neutral rating because I want to believe this vet practice had the best intentions but it feels like they should have suggested an ultrasound in the first place instead of multiple visits, a surgery that possibly could have been avoided (or corrected the issue the first time) and me being out an additional $3,600 (on top of the emergency vet surgery). Communication was good at first but dropped off at the end. I’d recommend going here for basic and/or routine services but anything requiring more expertise you’re better off at another place or BetterPet Urgent Care. In fact, I can’t recommend BetterPet enough. Frankly, the cost was the less than what Hanover Animal charged me for the same services…They’ve also already called twice to check on our dog who they spent an hour with whereas we haven’t heard anything from this Hanover Animal.

Absolutely devastating. This place is old school and literally crooks. I have spent thousands of dollars on my cat and am now at mechanicsville vet with my cat who is twice as sick as she was last week. The doctors don’t communicate. I’m sick to my stomach with how they have treated my animal. I NEVER WRITE BAD REVIEWS. This is a first for me. I would recommend never going to this clinic for animal care. They are crooks. *edited review* I did write my review when I was extremely emotional so let me go back and explain.. I brought my rescue kitty there a little over 9 months ago. SHE was very sick.. 8 weeks later.. after round after round of medication she seemed a lot better. She’s always had sinus issues but we could never determine wha is was. Last Thursday I bring my car in she’s been throwing everything up and acting very off, sleepy sick. They charged me $750 dollars to tell me she has GI issues and no blockage. We took her to new clinic and after first emergency visit they scheduled ultrasound. A week later my cat is deathly ill getting emergency surgery to remove blockage that’s now in her intestines. She has serious damage and might now make it. Thank god the found it on ultrasound and opened her up. My family is absolutely devastated. Emotionally and financially. But we love our cat.. THE CRAZIEST PART OF THIS FOR ME IS THAT AFTER 9 OR MORE MONTHS OF SEEING US AND OUR DOG.. AT THE FIRST VISIT TO NEW CLINIC THEY LET ME KNOW IT WAS A MALE CAT.. absolutely baffling.. dr. B at Hanover literally told me that my cat had a small uterus so there was nothing to worry about.. insanity. I’m so disappointed. TAKE YOUR PET TO MECHANICSVILLE ANIMAL HOSPITAL.

First time leaving a negative review for something. Just wanted to say the extreme lack of communication, and hostility is why I’ve decided to leave this vet. I have been bringing my pup here for 5 years since I rescued her. And for some reason for the past 3 years I have not received any notifications or contact informing me that she was due for any updated vaccines, meds, annual check ups, etc. despite the fact that they had all of my information, the only “notifications” I received that she was due for something was the declining of her medication unexpectedly when trying to order it. This caused lapses in meds my pup needed.. when, for the third year in a row, her meds lapsed and I called questioning why this keeps happening one of the receptionists stonewalled me and began remarking that it’s illegal for me to not bring her for her annual check up and she’s out of date for her rabies, insinuating that I’m intentionally not bringing her and being careless… every single person I know who has a companion is notified and kept up to date by their veterinarians about up and coming vaccines, visits, etc. honestly… if, when I called up there, I wasn’t met with such hostility I may have even stayed and given them another shot but at this point my patience is exasperated. Just my personal experience with the service. I hope the best for someone else and that possibly they can communicate better for others in the future. Edit: they deleted my review, so reposting
