My name is Hunter and I'd like to say that I am deeply immersed in the world of animal rescue, dedicating my time to multiple shelters and organizations to foster or transport dogs in desperate need of loving homes. One such place is the Suncoast Humane Society. However, I must confess, my continued partnership with this organization is heavily influenced by my connections with fellow fosters rather than the organization themselves. In fact, I have never encountered a facility where the staff appears so detached from the welfare of the animals in their care as I have at Suncoast. During one of my recent visits, I had inquired about a Poodle named Prince. Upon first sight, my heart sank. Prince was not only underweight, but his fur was an unkempt mass that obscured his eyes and bore testament to his neglect. The mats clinging to him were far more than just unruly hair; they were painful burdens, visible signs of neglect. I immediately voiced my concerns to the staff, desperately trying to justify my instincts as both a Poodle owner and a foster with Florida Poodle Rescue. I offered to take Prince to a groomer, even volunteering to pay for it out of my own pocket. To my shock, the manager, Michael, brushed me off with an air of annoyance, insisting that Prince did not require grooming and was "perfectly fine." It seemed he was completely indifferent to the reality that Prince was likely in pain, constrained by a coat that was largely one unyielding dreadlock. The lack of empathy displayed was staggering. This poor dog, unable to relieve himself because of the severe matting around his rear, had fecal matter stuck to his backside, effectively closing off any semblance of normal function. It wasn't until I reached out to the CEO that I was able to get anything done. Today we were able to finally take him to get groomed. His "unnecessary" groom ended up lasting 5 HOURS as my groomer worked her clippers and shears through the mats that covered his poor body. I am beyond disappointed, not only in the organization's ignorance but in the manager’s callous disregard for the animals' wellbeing. Once Kingston, my current foster through Suncoast, finds his forever home, I can assure you that my association with Suncoast Humane Society will almost certainly come to an end. This entire experience has left me utterly disgusted and disheartened by their failure to show the basic compassion and love that every animal deserves. It's time for them to do better, for the sake of the voiceless souls in their care.
As a foster for Suncoast....I can't say enough about the staff and volunteers that make it what it is. All the animals in their care are so lucky to have them. It is not easy to care for so many unwanted animals and have it result in positive outcomes. Keep up the great work folks!!!!
I just adopted a dog from this Humane Society. Everyone I have ever met since coming has been pleasant and lovely to encounter. Michael, who I’ve spoken to several times really truly knows what’s going on with each and every dog. My sister and I went there together when we adopted and we are both going to donate to this organization. They are doing their absolute best, but definitely with funds they could use the help. They just took on some dogs that came in from Puerto Rico and those were one of the ones that I adopted. They are truly doing their best. I appreciate everything that they do for these animals and will continue to support them! If you can donate your time or your money, please do. The picture below is who I adopted. She was Shalimar now known as Emmy!
We got a kitty! It was very hard to decide which one though! So many adorable furbabies!
We cannot say enough about their Canine Connections program, we brought our rescue in today, that we adopted from Suncoast, I met Lizz and more staff. We walked in with a petrified dog who wouldn't walk on a leash, scared of other dogs, to a CONFIDENT dog who just got home from a 1mi walk around the block. When I say we cannot say enough about Canine Connections and the staff, I mean it. It's a wonderful program that I am so thankful we found and have full plans to bring our girl weekly! It's a nice controlled environment for dogs to play and interact, where as you run a big risk at a dog park with no control. We can't thank you enough Lizz for your work with Oakley. I can say, you may just be the new dog whisperer ;) Thanks for being so awesome with our girl. We can't wait to see how she progresses!
They neutered our two dogs, Arlo and Cooper, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Golden Retriever, respectively. They both tolerated the surgery well but Arlo did have a little longer healing time. To be fair to them, he is a Corgi and he is very sassy and temperamental as Corgis tend to be. No issues with drainage, swelling, irritation, or pain. Would bring animals here again, as they offer a more fair price for staying and neutering (most vets are ludicrous). My aunt adopted a very obese but cute dog named Chewy, who has been adjusting well and getting healthier. They seem to do a good job with their animals overall and can't be blamed for a surrenders weight issue. I have added a few photos of the two boys for reference. All is well!
