We adopted our wonderful dog, Benny, from the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA, and our experience has been nothing short of amazing. Inspired by the positive atmosphere, we started volunteering and walking dogs weekly, and every visit reminds us how much this shelter has transformed. The leadership and staff here are dedicated, compassionate, and have truly turned this place around over the past six years. They’ve established an outstanding foster program for both dogs and cats, helping so many animals find loving homes. The facility itself is warm, welcoming, and far cleaner than you’d expect an animal shelter to be, which speaks volumes about the care and pride the team takes in their work. If you’re considering adopting, fostering, or even just volunteering, I highly recommend the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA. They’re a crucial part of the community and give each animal the best possible chance at finding a forever home. Thank you, RHSPCA, for all that you do!

I volunteered and fostered here last summer and had an amazing experience! All the volunteers and staff were super helpful and welcoming and I had a great experience. I fostered (and then foster failed) a cat Lucy and had a great experience doing so. They provided me with litter, food, a cat bed, litter box, toys, etc with no cost! After two months I decided to adopt my 12 year old girl (now 13!) and it was great! I am so happy to have had this experience, especially being able to adopt Lucy. She is truly amazing ❤️

I came and saw 2 dogs Friday and was told that i would need to come back with my current dog so we could see how they interact. I was told this by 3 people. i honestly think it is a great idea to have dogs meet each other before living together. My dog - does not like the car and is very timid but i brought her anyways. I show up the next day for my scheduled time. All that happened during ny scheduled time was me sitting down in a room with a woman, while my dog is waiting outside, who told me she doesn’t think this would be a fit and would not entertain a meet between the dogs. I traveled 4 hours this weekend to make this happen, scheduled a time to meet, forced my dog into a car ride, all just to be told something that could’ve be mentioned to me in the first 15 minutes. Why make something so full of friction and waste my time? Do you not want dogs to leave the shelter? I understand finding the right home but why not just be transparent on the initial visit?

They allow people to adopt (steal) dogs from those who try desperately to get them back. If you're arrested or if your dog(s) were lost and you try and try and try to get your dogs back, they'll work with people in the local community to prevent you from doing so if they want to give the dog(s) a different home simply because they don't like you. No matter how tragic your situation - even if it was none of your fault, they will ignore your calls and outreach until after your dogs are adopted (stolen) by someone else. After days of calling, Sarah, one of the staff members, waited until my dogs were adopted before answering the phone so she could tell me they were gone - simply because she and others decided to not like me and go with the flow and give my dogs away. They knew I couldn't get to them in time and that I had arranged someone to help me pick them up but instead, they decided to go around that and prevent my dogs from eventually being returned to me. They also knew I was told (by law enforcement officers that they know and work with) that I could pay (and I agreed) to have them stay at the SPCA until I was able to get them and they still went around that, reneged and gave them away. It is horrible and wrong. And they worked with others to make this happen. It is a small community and pieces of it are heartbreaking and cruel. Not to mention that this small community is connected to additional people who support this kind of behavior. If they don't like you, they don't care at all about taking your loved ones away - in this case, your dogs. And they seem to take pride in it. It seemed to make Sarah and Summer happy to have engaged in this unprofessional behavior. I can't for the life of me understand that kind of psychology. To enjoy doing something like this simply because you don't like the owner will never not shock me. How? How do you do this to someone and enjoy it? And support it? This cruelty has been impossible to get over and constantly heart wrenching. Please, please change this and understand the pain you are causing. Endless pain. Please, from the bottom of your hearts. Please do the right thing. Please.

This is one of the best SPCA shelters I have ever dealt with...I had them euthanize one of my miniature dachshunds a few years ago, and after another one died they cremated her remains. Very compassionate and understanding staff.

Very well maintained facility with caring and hardworking staff! I fell in love with my pup on our first visit and was able to take her home the same day. They have reached out to me on more than one occasion since adoption day to make sure she is adjusting well.
