Description The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina (HSEC) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to the welfare of animals. Founded on a mission of compassion and driven by the tireless efforts of volunteers and staff, our organization works to find homes for hundreds of animals every year. HSEC is supported entirely by donations, fundraising events, and grants. We are not affiliated with national organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States or ASPCA. Our work encompasses rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming efforts, ensuring that every animal receives the care and attention they deserve as we work towards a future where every creature can thrive.

Late last year I decided that I was ready to welcome a pet into my life. After much consideration I decided to adopt from the humane society. I received a response to my application in a weeks time. The staff members Shelby and Morgan were very helpful in setting up a meeting with my chosen dog and her foster. Communication was clear and consistent, and continued to be so through the adoption process. My dog was going through heart-worm treatment and everyone made sure to keep me up to date on her and give advice to help her transition into her forever home. The staff at HSEC are kind, caring and driven and go above and beyond for their animals and community. I can’t express how grateful I am for their work and helping me find my fur baby.

This organization is absolutely wonderful. My family and I have adopted two of our dogs from the humane society, I couldn’t speak more highly of them. The staff is absolutely wonderful especially Morgan. She is incredibly attentive and educated. Love this place!

Not much to report. Went to get information on finding homes for some puppies. Or seeing if they had room for them for what other options were available. The The main entrance office is clearly marked. But the office was locked, so initially I felt that they may have been closed but I knocked on the door anyway. A young woman answered and stood in the doorway while I assumed I was not allowed in. But she was very friendly and very informative. And this was me stopping by on a whim, I did not have an appointment. And I'm not sure you can make an appointment. We've emailed them previously but never got a response back. Oh and currently they don't have any room for any animals at the time of this posting.

I adopted this lovely sweet girl form them 2 months ago. She was part of their Onomotopia Litter. She is the best dog! The staff at the shelter are so friendly and the dogs are well cared for. My pup spent the the first crucial months of her puppyhood there and the staff did wonders! She is great with sit and down, leash manners are a work in progress but she is making great strides. She has been taught shake, other paw, high five and focus (looking at me). Focus has come in really handy when out walking as she now pays more attention to me and is eager to walk closer to get treats. I also accidentally taught her to fetch lol. Seriously she is a gem and I am so happy that I adopted her. Loves to cuddle on the couch, great with other dogs (though she is only allowed to play with dogs I personally know), great with cats too (my friend has a cat and 2 dogs) and amazing with close friends and family. A little shy around strangers, but thats fine. She is still learning not to jump on people so her exposure to new people is limited. I would highly recommend this shelter as a place to find your new friend.

Morgan is rude and on some sort of power trip and talks down to people. She made my daughter cry when she was only trying to give a cat in need a good home. We will go elsewhere to find a cat who needs a loving home.

Felt really discriminated here a Autistic person with atypical speech delay that forces me to either word vomit "scripts" that may not reflect what I think feel or intend to say or I have to live nonverbally and write/type/sign. The front desk lady was smiles and relaxed but when her and another staff started to engage me in chit chat I began word vomiting anxiously scripts best I could and her body language became noticeable tense and her expression judgmental and started consulting others and giving me the run around. From there during a dog meet and greet I noticed and corrected multiple times improper leash handing by the 2 staff they don't know how to safely walk large dogs without letting the dogs drag them. They did not parallel walk the dogs they anxiously stood hovering over the anxious shelter dog and my dog and my dog let the shy dog sniff his but then they shared muzzle kisses nut the shelter dog was noticeably confused why the shelter staff were. Hovering in anxiously and was fearful and tense from the 2 humans improperly hovering barked defensively at my dog when he was pawing and bowing trying to initiate play with the shelter dog. Then asked me to leave due to busy and email back to reschedule and nt responded to email. I would live to see the shelter staff learn how to properly handle and walk dogs, they also need to not allow anxious staff to do meet and greet it sabotages shelter pets as they rely on the staff they mirror that anxiety scared of the new people because the staff seem to be. Also ive dealt with the front desk girl multiple times shes not good with ND people she did make rude comments about answering and over sharing due to anxiety and trying to cope with clearly being treated differently than all the neurotypical volunteers. Will be volunteering else where from now on especially since they turned down my offer last year to volunteer as an experienced behaviorist and trainer (previously volunteering as a behaviorist and foster parent to behavoir cases for a no kill shelter in Dallas. TX ) because they said they already had 1 but um he apparently hasn't trained staff how to walk large dogs or safely introduce dogs without anxiety in the year since .
