Extremely disappointed with the adoption process. In order to even view the cats, they make you fill out an application. Not only do they ask you the basic questions that are totally reasonable (anti declawing, how you will correct cats scratching furniture, etc…) but they do things like look up your address to see where you live, look up who owns your home, look at the square footage of your home, and ask you insanely intrusive questions. They automatically treat you like a criminal/ insinuate that you are a liar if they suspect something is incorrect on your application without even asking about your situation. They look into your life at an FBI level and treat you like you don’t know anything. We accidentally didn’t fill out one section on the paperwork and the lady said “the paperwork says if you don’t fully complete the application, it’s is automatically denied so why wouldn’t you fill out this section”. Maybe we accidentally missed it? They belittle you to the point where you don’t even want to do business with them anymore/ adopt a cat. There’s no wonder why they have 200 cats hoarded in their facilities. I was shaking when I left and had to call them later to throw out our application because they were extremely rude and intrusive. Do not even bother doing business with these people.
I adopted a cat from here in January and he has been just amazing! Genuinely the best cat I've ever met. They have so many kitty's, there's bound to be one for everyone. The application process is thorough but it's only to make sure they aren't getting a cat returned because of X Y and Z and in the end hurting the cat more. The adoption process went smooth and they where very communicative with me. They even helped me catch the little guy whenever he first got home and got stuck under my house. They provided traps and food and a volunteer. I couldn't recommend this shelter more!
I had a lady recommend this place to me as I was in a desperate situation. Long story short, my daughter and I got kicked out of where I was staying, where I was supposed to be saving money to get on my feet, and I had nowhere to go. We were told on a monday to be out by that saturday. Anyway, I wish I would have had time to read the reviews first, but again, I was desperate, exhausted, and heartbroken (as is my daughter). They helped calm her anxiety down at night enough to where she could mostly ward off a panic attack and fall asleep. They are 10 and 7, indoor cats, and we've had them nearly their entire lives, except for a few months. I couldn't find anywhere or anyone to help us, or temporarily keep them. I literally have no money to board them. So, we had to give them up. I am hoping to be able to get them back once I get into a place, but right now, we are in a shelter. I've started a job and may start another one, unless my daughter gets approved for disability. I am thankful that they took them in. I wish that I didn't have to take them there, or anywhere. I'm not a drug user. I'm not an offender. I just ended up in a bad spot, and had no other options and I'm hoping that if they are ok, and nobody adopts them, then Val will let us get them back. Also, there's apparently a new lady at the desk and she was super nice and understanding, as was the other younger lady. I think the shorter, older lady was probably just stressed out and wanted to save all the cats and feels bad for them. She's probably seen all kinds of situations.
BEWARE! If you own a dog in your household, these cat hoarders will not let you adopt. Don't waste your time or energy trying to adopt one if the 300 cats here. This place is a sad sad experience and I feel so bad for all the wonderful cats that have been there for over 2 years which is over half of them. I ended up going to Grand River Humane Society and adopted a kitten from them and they were wonderful over there.
I had a terrible experience with CLAWS. I adopted a cat that had behavioral issues and needed a home with more people and pets so it would feel at home. It cried most of the night, tried jumping on the hot stove repeatedly and ate most of my plants. I had asked for help from CLAWS but they only suggested that I play music for the cat at night. Needless to say, I had to return the cat and was shamed for not putting up with the behavior for as long as it took (they said three months or so). I asked if I could get my money back and I was told that I had signed away my right for a refund when I applied for the adoption. I asked if I could adopt another cat and was told that out of the 90+ cats that they had, none would be a good fit for me at that time but maybe in a few months. I left feeling bewildered. I later asked for proof of what I had signed, but there was no response and nothing on their website backed up this claim. Then I asked to have my money returned to me, but once again I was never responded to. I should have done my due diligence and looked into this place before I adopted a cat - this was a terrible experience and I hope that they will do the right thing and refund my money.
Watch out for this organization! I rescued a small stray cat because she was being bullied by other strays. I took her to CLAWS and in order for them to take her they wanted a $100 donation. Are you kidding me. Since when did a rescue demand a person to donate before they'd take in a animal that needed them. I wound up paying $60 and a volunteer paid the other $40. I tried to do a kind thing for a creature in need only to be held up for money. The woman didn't care that the cat would be forced to be in the cold and picked (we have a large dog who hates cats) on since I wasn't going to be paying a $100 I don't have. The $60 hurt bad enough. Do not use this place unless you are willing to pay their demand.
