Description Serving since 1919, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that takes in abandoned, abused, homeless and unwanted animals that need tender loving care until they can find a permanent home. We help these animals find their permanent home, prevent animal cruelty and educate people on the humane treatment of animals.

Got our first dog here in 2007, and now our most recent pup as well. "Deandra" (now "Izzy") is the sweetest pea you could ask for, the staff was helpful and allowed us to wander the area after completing our application. I appreciated that they required us to bring our dog from home to meet her prior to allowing us to complete the adoption process, so we all knew that they'd get along well.

Very helpful staff and, a great atmosphere, the only sad part is I couldn't afford to bring more home😊 love me some shelter pets❤️❤️ Sadly we had to say goodbye to Hooch, our furbaby for 13 wonderful years, see ya on the other side buddy 😢 ❤️ 💙 💔

We walked in to fill out an application and check out the kitties, but immediately fell in love with one. The adoption process was quick and easy. The staff that helped us were wonderful. They answered all of our questions. They even made sure we had kitten food and a homemade toy before leaving. Loved it!

I love my shelter rescue from here! The employees were great about reviewing my lifestyle and what digs might or might not fit with my life. They didn't try to convince me to get a dog that would not have been a good fit and I ended up with a fantastic buddy!

I planned to adopt a cat from this location, got the go ahead from my landlord, had more than enough funds to afford a cat, willing to spend whatever it costs to help a kitty without a home get a home they need, and was informed that I could not adopt unless I had a mortgage payment. Then they have the audacity to post constantly on social media asking for more people to adopt. I, as well as many other people, would love to help these animals into homes, but the bar to adopt is so weirdly high. I understand not everyone is fit to be a pet owner, and payment for adoption fees DOES vet out those who can't consistently care for those animals, but are you serious? A freaking MORTGAGE is needed to adopt an animal? This humane society is directly contributing to all these unhoused animals.
