Description Since 1888, The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County has worked to protect animals, support pet owners, and enhance the relationships between animals and people. The Humane Society shelters almost 10,000 animals every year and maintains more than a dozen humane programs. The Humane Society is proud to offer adoption programs, vet services, and community support including low-cost spay/neuter and microchip services, a Community Cat program that reduces kitty overpopulation in our community, and a Pet Food Pantry that aims to keep pets in their homes by providing families with pet food and supplies.

When they had an adoption event because they were at capacity, we knew it was time to take on another doggo. We were pleasantly surprised by the crowd and the community response to the event. It took most of the day to get to meet and then adopt our new girl but everyone was polite and professional despite the fact that they were extremely busy and several people were being outright rude and borderline abusive about the waiting. We were glad to help and give a dog a second chance and a forever home.
Amazing for adoption! Worst experience with our missing cat. Our cat went missing in November we gave the shelter multiple Petco Love flyers and they said they would keep and eye out. We checked the website regularly and found a cat named Leo on 4/2/24, as soon as we saw him we reached out with identifying features. We got an email saying it was a match, but then got an email only a few minutes later saying he had just been adopted out. Instead of giving us a chance since we live only 10 minutes out they still went through with the adoption. We got a call later after i was sitting in the lobby and was confirmed that it was 100% our cat as the surrendering owner matched my roommates crazy ex whose already stolen our cat multiple times. I feel like we received exactly 0 help except from a very kind short red haired individual. They gave us absolutely no time to check if it was our cat and still went through with the adoption after reading and responding to our email. They refused to reach out to the adopters even though it had only been an hour AND guilt tripped us about not checking the sight for a month when you guys had a flyer of our cat. You are either not checking your lost pets or you threw our flyer away, either way we just lost our baby boy. Absolutely heart broken you gave us hope saying you'd reach out and took it away saying you wouldn't.
Unfortunately we waited more than an hour today only to be told that the dogs we wanted to visit had been adopted. We had filled out paperwork yesterday that was misplaced by today so we had to fill out new paperwork. I realize they are understaffed, so hopefully they are able to hire some help soon. Also the dogs we wanted to visit had only been there for two days from time of intake when we went today. Very disappointed.
I recently brought in a young female cat to this location for drop off, and was very unpleased with the service I got from the short blonde lady working in the surrender office. She asked a lot of questions, and I explained to her the circumstances: the cat was not a part of my neighborhood stray cat colony, and had absolutely zero survival skills, no awareness of dangerous things like cars or aggressive dogs, and that it would be unsafe for her to stay outside my house as she had already tried to get into my front door despite my non-cat friendly dogs attempting to bite at her through the screen. This woman ignored everything I had just said, and concluded that she was "probably just a community cat" so they were going to spay her and release her back into the area. I said that there was a serious coyote issue in my area (my neighbors outdoor cat recently got eaten by a pack of them), and that there were dogs like I'd just explained. Her response: "well we're not going to drop her off at your front door step". I kept my mouth shut, but I'm sure my annoyance at her attitude was showing on my face, and she said "what? Is it YOUR cat?". I don't appreciate being dismissed and interrogated for trying to help a sweet cat stay safe. I also don't appreciate being sent outside with said cat to wait for an hour in the heat because that woman didn't want to deal with me anymore. Fortunately, the rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful, no unnecessary attitude problems or interrogation, and they took the cat from me with no problem. It is unfortunate that this kind of service is accepted at the humane society.
We adopted a kitten from them. I searched their online adoptions but went in person and found the perfect kitten in the upstairs room before she was listed online. Please be patient when adopting! They are doing their best but it can take hours to complete the process (or get a chance to meet a dog in person). I had better luck on Thursday early afternoon, but Saturday and Tuesday afternoons were super busy. Tuesdays are probably bad because Monday is closed and all of the kittens who were on hold were getting spayed. I had a medical question about my new kitten and it took them several business days to get back to me, but the worker was very kind and helpful.
Very clean kennels and amazing staff. They really care for the animals here and go above and beyond to care for them. The staff often stays late to make sure every animal is booked and taken care of. Often do adoption deals which is really nice. 10/10 recommend for your next pet or if you’re looking to volunteer somewhere
