Description Since 1888, The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County has worked to protect animals, support pet owners, and enhance the relationships between animals and people. The Humane Society shelters almost 10,000 animals every year and maintains more than a dozen humane programs. The Humane Society is proud to offer adoption programs, vet services, and community support including low-cost spay/neuter and microchip services, a Community Cat program that reduces kitty overpopulation in our community, and a Pet Food Pantry that aims to keep pets in their homes by providing families with pet food and supplies.

I joined the foster program months ago, heard nothing for weeks, sent several emails to see if there was an update, because there are so many rabbits in need of homes on their Web site, but nothing for over 3 months. Finally, after leaving a minor complaint via email to display my displeasure, they finally apologize and forwarded me to their foster program. Another few weeks go by and I receive an email regarding 11 bunnies needing foster homes, which I responded to within a short time. Then several hours later, I get a response saying two people already offered to take some, so to me, it is obvious they have a preference for specific people to foster. They would not have waited so late to respond if that were not the case, and face it, bunnies are not even in the top 4 of most popular pets. However, they did say there might be some left for me to take, but who knows how many months it will take to find out. I just wanted to give back to rabbits because of how badly treated they tend to be and how they are often treated as lesser animals than dogs and cats. In addition to that, I wanted to give back more after the trauma of the tragedy at Sammamish Animal Sanctuary in June, and multiple traumatic childhood experiences with rabbits, due to the adults' fault. At this point I think I would rather withdrawal my application and foster with a real rabbit rescue, because it seems to be going nowhere, like pulling teeth to help innocent animals in need. Yet there are always over 20 available bunnies on their Website at all times. My bunnies are all over 5 and 6 years old in perfect health, never had dental nor gut issues, get the ideal diet of unlimited fresh hay, fairly small amounts of premium pellets, fresh dark leafy green veggies, small amounts of fruit occasionally, their litter boxes are changed often (and their habits are perfect), exercise, vet care and large living spaces away from anything that would upset them. They know I am experienced and have raised bunnies for over 30 years. Maybe if they cared less about pronouns in their bios and more about actually helping the animals get away from the shelter, their way of doing things would not be such a joke that it seems to be. Would not recommend.
When they had an adoption event because they were at capacity, we knew it was time to take on another doggo. We were pleasantly surprised by the crowd and the community response to the event. It took most of the day to get to meet and then adopt our new girl but everyone was polite and professional despite the fact that they were extremely busy and several people were being outright rude and borderline abusive about the waiting. We were glad to help and give a dog a second chance and a forever home.
Vaccine and wellness clinic was fantastic! They were running a few minutes behind but no big deal. Got my kitty vaccinated for $15! So affordable, shows they really care about the safety and well-being of animals. Everyone was very friendly. I had to keep checking their website every few days to make an appointment, they only open up about a week before and fill up fast! I missed September but made it in for the October date. The clinic is only open one day a month. Worth it!
My friend and I went to the shelter today and were first inline. You need to be when they have these kind of events!!! My friend was there on Thursday and had a very negative experience. However today was much better. Daniel was AMAZING. He connected us each with the perfect match. My friend took home Pierce.. He is the sweetest boy! He gets along great with his his other lab and they have become instant friends.💕 Daniel introduced me to a little stray girl that came in who was still on a 72 hour hold but allowed me to peek at her through the window of her kennel and it was instant. I can’t wait to bring her home. We were out of the shelter by noon and a much more pleasant experience visiting. We left with one and put A hold on another! Mission accomplished.
i’m only rating them 2 stars just because i loved my dog so much that i adopted from here, back in september of 2023. i adopted mako, he was a blue nose pitbull terrier & he was 1 years old. when i adopted him, they notified me that he had a jaw defect, which was pretty obvious just by looking at him. that didn’t matter to me. they gave me instructions on what kind of food he needs to eat due to his jaw defect & that he required more attention than the average dog does, because if he gets ahold of something in his mouth he could choke. i still adopted him & i was willing to give him all the love & attention he needed. they also referred a vet to us to take him in for a free exam/check up which we had to wait a couple months to even take him to his appointment. a couple months after we got him, we finally were able to take him to that free vet exam. the vet told us something that the humane society failed to tell us about. not only does he have a jaw defect, but he also had an extra piece of skin that was located in his throat which made it harder for him to breathe & even swallow things sometimes. unfortunately, mako passed away yesterday (07/07/2024) due to a heatstroke because he struggled breathing in this hot weather. we did everything we could at home to try to help him get through this, like putting his paws on wash cloths with the water temperature being on cool & we even put a fan right next to him. we were there with him the entire he was going through seizures & was struggling to breathe. he couldn’t pant like any other dog because of his jaw. we tried to take him to any available vets but unfortunately it was sunday so they were either closed or the ones that were open was at full capacity to even see him (smh). i am very heartbroken by this & i’m upset that the humane society did not do their part before selling him to me. his surgery to get that extra piece of skin removed was thousands of dollars & i wasn’t able to afford that. the humane society makes more than enough money & for them not to have that surgery done before even selling him to me, is ridiculous. his jaw, we managed with caution making sure he didn’t choke. but you guys should’ve taken care of his surgery for his throat before hand. i am very disappointed & heartbroken that this happened to him & i do not regret adopting him. however, i will never adopt a dog from here again due to them not making sure they take care of any necessary surgery or medical conditions of any animal that is there. you should be ashamed & do better.
Unfortunately we waited more than an hour today only to be told that the dogs we wanted to visit had been adopted. We had filled out paperwork yesterday that was misplaced by today so we had to fill out new paperwork. I realize they are understaffed, so hopefully they are able to hire some help soon. Also the dogs we wanted to visit had only been there for two days from time of intake when we went today. Very disappointed.
