Description "We are a private, non-profit serving the public by providing care, shelter, and placement into loving homes for neglected and unwanted animals in the greater Spokane area through pet adoptions."
They told me my new cats didn't have anything contagious that would spread to other cats in my home. They said my cats had permanent upper respiratory damage/irritation that may or may not subside over time. I brought them home, and now all of my cats have herpes and pneumonia. When I called to discuss this, they apologized for any misinformation I received, and stated that since I signed a medical waiver, they would not be assisting with any veterinary costs incurred, and offered me some free vitamins. I made sure shelter staff were aware, during the adoption process, that these new cats would be living in close quarters with other animals. They assured me this would be safe. As a result, they've allowed chronic viral upper respiratory infections to spread to healthy animals in my home. I checked the medical records for the new cats, and they were never tested for viral infections. Their claims that the cats were injured, but not sick, were completely unfounded. They claim to have no recollection of these statements, and because I did not carefully read the waiver, but instead signed it out of trust in what I'd been told by the staff, I've made my bed and now I get to lie in it. I'm beyond furious. I should have read the paperwork. I shouldn't have trusted the staff. I hoped they would try to make this right, but all they've offered me is $20 worth of vitamins. The $750 (and counting) in veterinary expenses, and the spread of the infections to my other cat, are my problems, and I can kick rocks.
They were great. I just wish I could have gone back with my dog but everyone was wonderful there. Tucker on the way home was happy. Lord of treats and the best boy ever!
Rude employees!!!! We stopped in looking for an opportunity to see what dogs they had and if we could meet some pups for possible adoption. The lady at the counter greeted us and I explained that our dog ran off a few moths ago ( we live in the country) and didn’t come back. It happens and we did our best to find him but with bears and cougars we knew something happened. Her demeanor change for helpful greeting to accusatory, asked me how I was going to keep another dog safe when we couldn’t even keep our last one safe! What the bloody heck! I was absolutely blown away by her self righteousness. They say don’t buy dogs off Craigslist etc but when the county animal shelter is rude and goes out of their way to make you feel like a bad human I wouldn’t adopt from them ever. And now evidently if you surrender and adopted animal back even though they say if you decide you can’t keep them bring them back. My friends circumstance change and couldn’t keep the dog she adopted 2 months ago. She took the dog back and explained why and so on.. They freaking called her back the next day because the dog was anxious and tried guilting her into taking the dog back!!!
I took over care for my terminally sick cousin who just died of ALS. When I reached out to ask for help because one of the dogs attacked the other and I am in a town I’m not from and in this horrible situation and needed some support to navigate this hell, They didn’t even returned my call. I just got an email saying they can’t help. One of the two dogs was even adopted from them! How is this treatment humane to anyone? Do better people!
In January of this year we had to make the gut-wrenching decision to put our sweet fur-baby down to rest, and the staff I encountered at the Spokane Humane Society were phenomenal! They were able to accommodate us on a Sunday, and they were SO patient with me while I was bawling hysterically. They wouldn’t allow me to be in the room while they put her down (it’s legally prohibited, from what I understood) but they did allow me to hold my baby while they sedated her so that she was never conscious of me not being there, and that was just as well. Thank you SO much for that, Amy! We chose to take her home and bury her under my favorite tree, and they brought her out discreetly wrapped in a little blanket. Putting a pet down is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, and their patience and compassion was so greatly appreciated.
The staff here are obviously protective X compassionate to the animals housed here. The volunteer process is extremely thorough as well, with highly educational modules. Their cat areas are cozy and make interacting with/observing them easy. It's difficult to walk through the kennel, but the dogs, though stressed, are clearly cared for. Setting up a meet and greet with the dogs is easy; there is a room specifically for this purpose with a bench, a chair and a sink (and treats). We had a great time this year for the National Day of Mourning taking one of the pups out to the run to play in the snow. We highly recommend the Spokane humane Society as a place to give back to these innocent animals who are sadly and too often subject to our whims.
