One of the best places in Iowa to adopt from! I have adopted both a ca and a rabbit here over the years, just adopted the rabbit today. I highly recommend them to anyone. It is a very professional and clean environment, friendly and knowledgeable staff and seamless adoption process with reasonable adoption fees. If you're looking for your next pet, please check them out!

Owning cats has been my lifelong dream, and after moving to Iowa my boyfriend and I decided it was time! We went to ARL and met Hazelnut (formerly known as Naomi) and Sage (formerly known as Nadia). The two kittens were alone, not a bonded pair, but we decided to go on a limb and adopt the two of them together to give them both a chance at a new home. It's been 3 days and they're the best of friends and complete and total sweethearts. We love these two so so much and are so happy we chose this shelter to adopt from. The adoption staff were also extremely knowledgeable and their policies extremely fair and friendly to a new pet parents such as myself. Thank you ARL for helping us pick the best new additions to our family!

Went to adopt a cat, and the lady in the front standing in the lobby was extremely rude. Brown hair lady and younger, (this happened today at 3:30 p.m.) and just standing there and told me she didn’t “have time,” to show me the kitten I was interested in in the other building. So sad, we were so excited to adopt, and we left crushed. She wasn’t doing anything either except just standing there.. she was extremely rude, and was also blantantly ignoring us. Later, asked if we could get a couple dogs out to walk them and she said “no, we don’t have time for this.” I feel bad for the animals there because of her.

I would give five stars originally , however I am only giving one. Earlier this week my grandmother had relinquished her cats to the shelter and normally they do NOT hold them for owners. However we were in direct contact with Abby from ARL and they said they’d rather keep them in the family instead of transferring them to some stranger all together! We asked for them to be placed in a foster home until we could arrive and pick said cats up. (We reside in Colorado) Well Sunday we tried to reach out on behalf of my grandmother to pick up the cats for today (Monday the 28th) now it is currently 4:55 the morning nearing the time we have to leave and still nothing. I feel powerless and heartbroken to say the least. We were given the foster homes address but no contact information. These will be the last remaining thing of my grandmother and I wanted so desperately to take care of them into their old age. However ARL did not allow this to happen… definitely think before choosing to do any business with them. If you’re going though hard times especially…..

We adopted a 11 week old kitten from the ARL, because we wanted a companion for the kitten we rescued 4 weeks earlier. We gave her a bath a few hours after we had brought her home, and we discovered that she was infected with fleas. It's very frustrating that as new pet owners, and after communicating that there was another kitten in our home, that they did not give us any type of warning about the fleas. They said she passed her vet check a few days prior. and I'm angry that the ARL would not have a control or knowledge on fleas infecting their animals. We now have to treat our rescued kitten and rid our home of fleas. We feel so sad for the adopted kitten that came home with fleas. It makes me think about how many other animals are suffering from a flea infection at the ARL

I recently adopted a male kitten (Vila) from the ARL Main location, but unfortunately had to return the kitten today 11/10/24 due to allergies that I developed. My experience with the employee (older male, do not know his name) who assisted me with the return was extremely disappointing and frustrating. Despite being aware of my allergy issues, this employee repeatedly asked me to carry and touch the kitten, even though there were other staff members in the room available to assist. This was not only inconsiderate but also made my allergy symptoms worse. I had taken medication beforehand, but it was unreasonable for him to put me in that position when other help was available. Additionally, the employee, an older male, was very dismissive and cold when I attempted to express my concerns about the kitten. He interrupted me multiple times and showed no empathy or warmth, which is surprising and disheartening from someone working at an animal shelter. The lack of professionalism and respect for my well-being was extremely disappointing. I sincerely hope ARL takes this feedback seriously, as such interactions reflect poorly on the organization and the compassionate care that should be at the heart of animal welfare.
