Description Rochester Animal Services is the City of Rochester's open admission animal services agency. That means we do not discriminate based on breed or type. However, through managed intake, we operate within our capacity for care to support the best outcomes. We serve Rochester's people and animals to create safe neighborhoods, support the human-animal bond, and save and enhance lives. Our offices and animal shelter/resource center are located on Verona Street. Our non-profit partner organization Verona Street Animal Society provides support through fundraising and promotions to enable us to better serve our shared mission.
It’s really too bad someone doesn’t allocate more money for this establishment. It is nothing to look at, but the staff is wonderful (thank you, Katrina ) and bonus… there is security. We recently adopted two sister kittens. Waiting to bring them to their forever home. BTW, we renamed them Ivy and Willow. Super excited.
Just adopted Cuddle's and she is everything and more. What a great place to adopt from. Very smooth transaction and they were all knowledgeable. Thank you all from our family.
Be careful adopting a dog that isn't fixed from here. I adopted a dog 4 months ago that was unfixed. I was told that it would be 1 or 2 months before they would be able to get him fixed because they do not have a vet at the moment. After 3 months I was able to finally get a response from someone and all they said was they were working through the list and didn't give me an estimate of when that would be. Finally today after 4 months I got an email saying it would likely be 6 more months before they are able to get him fixed. If I knew I was going to have almost a year wait before he got fixed I would have gotten a dog from somewhere else. Especially since it is starting to cause problems with my older dog. My vet wants $1000 to get him fixed which is beyond my budget for something that was supposed to be included with adoption. I feel like I was just lied to in order to clear up space at the shelter.
Edit #2: reply from Verona received and I did send a message to the email given along with my phone number. I will update as appropriate. Edit: unfortunately and shockingly dogs are being adopted out prior to being fixed. We fostered a dog that was not fixed and which showed steady signs of pregnancy after the 1st 2 weeks with us and it was a 3-4 week battle to get her seen by a medical team. Had she had those puppies in our care we would not have been prepared nor capable of fostering them. At one point I was even told to bring a urine sample to test. After following up I was told the test was negative. Later when talking with a personal vet learned there is no such tests for dogs. That is a huge integrity issue that needs to be addressed asap. I love verona street. I support and recommend them any chance I get but in good conscious can no longer do so if dogs are being adopted without proper vetting. I hope this will be publicly addressed and prevention steps announced under the new management. I will update as appropriate and will continue to foster as I can. To be clear, this is an issue with operations NOT the day to day staff working hard to care for these dogs! One of our dogs was adopted through Verona 8 years ago and we have now fostered 2 dogs for then. Communication is great and so many dedicated staff. They always seem to be working hard and doing the best they can to help the animals find homes. Put aside politics and go adopt your next dog or cat! Shout out to foster coordinator Alisha, she's the best!
Seems like this establishment is always busy. This of course is a good thing. It's nice to see people willing to adopt. It's a little sad to see the environment these animals are living in, but the city does its best to provide for them. We fostered a nice 1 year old dog with the intent of adopting as soon as we can be seen by the vet.
What an amazing place!! The employees are so very nice despite all they see during their work hours. The volunteers are amazing!!! The shelter was very clean and the animals were attended to and being well cared for. Of course you fall in love over and over with each dog,cat and chicken(yes, there's a chicken for adoption) if I only had the room!!! So many pitbulls in cages breaks my heart to the point I wanna scream STOP BREEDING THEM!! In reality we all know it will never happen. Money talks and that's the bottom line. The most we can hope for is forcing people to admit they're not just part of the problem, they are the problem. Breeding is the problem with these beautiful pitbulls. The shelters are full, the employees are tired and the volunteers work from their heart to care for them. Not to mention the vets that offer services are awesome. So I personally want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO EVERY SINGLE DAY 💖💖💖 You're AMAZING!!! The pictures are of my beautiful sweet spoiled girl who is also a rescue.
