We were on vacation in Albuquerque from the Texas Hill Country. Our dog Twiggy got really sick on our trip up. Malaherd got us in right away and everyone there were super nice and helpful. We Highly Recommend these guys! Thanks again for saving Ms. Twiggy's life! Davy and Susan Ulbrich

The veterinarian with the last name Exelby is hands down the worst vet I have ever been to. Took dog in for a drainage of an abscess and she immediately diagnosed my dog as having a particular type of terminal cancer, said he was likely going to need palliative care, and needed to do a lung x-ray to see if the cancer metastasized in his lungs. This assumption was all made without taking one set of labs. When I suggested taking labs first before the x-ray, like a sane person, she audibly scoffed with a condescending arrogant chuckle about how with her experience she just knows its cancer. So I did both as well as a biopsy so i could see what the absess was (which drained her absess) and would you look at that there was no cancer at all just an infection. I also asked for a copy of the lung x-rays so i could cross reference them with a vet i know to ensure i wasn't being lied to for greed...never received those. Then when she brought him back in the room he was bleeding profusely from his abscess and she had me (not her) put the old bloody bandage back on him that I put on him earlier and not a new one. Keep in mind he was perfectly calm and showing no aggression and she was acting like she didn't even want to touch him. I didn't even mention how she kept interrupting me every time she would ask me a question. I guess she knows more about my dog from a 10 minute consultation then i would from being around him for years. I wouldn't trust this woman to take care of a houseplant let alone an animal. On a positive note, the people working at the front desk were phenomenal, so I can't say it's reflective of the clinic as a whole. And my opinion isn't isolated, scroll down and you'll see another person addressing her by name as well with similar complaints. This place also offers dental cleanings for over $1,000. Haha I'm all for paying to take care of our pets but that's just ridiculous, I've seen surgery cost less.

I don't really feel good about writing this review, but if I had read a recent one earlier I would have likely seen another vet. I moved to the area about two years ago and switched my dog from his old vet to this one as it's close by. It was more expensive than other vets, but I was happy with the care and ease of appointment making. I went again December '23 for my dog's wellness appointment and met with Dr. Stogsdill, who was fantastic and very helpful, answering some questions I had and giving me different options along with her own recommendations. Because of this I recommended the practice to my mother, and about a month ago she took her dogs and met with Dr. Exelby. It was then that I felt she was condescending and talked down to us as if we were purposefully mistreating our animals. My mother wasn't happy and decided to return to her old vet all the way down in Los Lunas. I figured it was just an off day and went ahead and scheduled a teeth cleaning for my dog. After his bloodwork appointment I got a call from Dr. Exelby, explaining that he had a high number of eosinophils in his blood, indicating either allergies or parasitic infection. Her voice made it sound like she didn't believe me when I said that I had noticed no unusual behavior or signs of illness, and then I felt scolded when I said that I didn't have him on heartworm preventative. Heartworm preventative wasn't mentioned in my December appointment, so of course I'm not going to have it if the vet didn't give me any information beforehand. They said they would test during my dog's teeth cleaning. The teeth cleaning comes, and I give a stool sample for them to check for intestinal parasites. Some hours later I returned to pick up my dog and when I asked about the heartworm test, they did not take his blood to test while he was under. For as drastic as the vet made it out his past bloodwork results to me, I was incredibly frustrated that they didn't test. They offered to take his blood right then and there, but my dog was already stressed from the procedure and I made my decision to not return to this vet. It's frustrating to write this because the receptionists and vet techs were lovely, and according to other reviewers Dr. Cole is a great vet, but if Dr. Stogsdill is no longer with the practice I don't see why I should continue paying the higher price and get this kind of treatment from the other vet.

Two parts to this review: 1) Actual hands on animal care was terrific. Both Dr Cole and tech were great with my nervous dog. 2) Hours, appointment availability, and pricing are awful. If you want to see practice owner vet, it takes a very long time to get an appt as she’s only there very part time. No weekend appts either so challenging if you can’t get Dr Cole’s already limited hours. Pricing for canine dental was a range of 900-1900, which felt very high to me. I went else where for $600 with equally great care.

Ripley and Milo love Dr. Cole. She takes so much time with them and especially our Milo since he has some reactive issues (he thinks he's a big dog). She is so patient and kind and loves our boys as much as we do. She gets on the floor and gives them love every time we see her. Her staff is awesome too!! We will always take our pets to Dr. Cole at Malaherd!

I live fairly close to this vet, and have meant to give them a chance and see if they are good. The first time I had to go was unfortunately when my elderly cat had a bad episode and had to be put down. They gave me my options and seemed fairly professional and empathetic at the time. They handled the cremation of my cat, and I ended up having to follow up 4 months later to get her remains as they just never bothered to keep track or call me back. Ok, red flag but I was still willing to give them another chance. Took my dog there today and the experience was HORRIBLE. we were condescended to, talked past, and endured barely veiled accusations that we don't take care of our dog at all - unprofessional, unempathetic, accusatory, judgmental and rude, with no basis in reality or fact. Snap judgments based on minimal information definitely don't make me feel like you are going make good treatment decisions for my animals, and your random unfounded prejudice against me as a pet owner does not lend to a trust relationship. Definitely not going back, very disappointed.
