More than five stars for dedication. Shiela took the call when the mamma bird in our yard died on her nest of eggs after a tragic accident. We called around and another rescuer gave us her mobile number. The number listed on the web is a land line that Shiela is having trouble with so it isn’t working at the moment. Google maps (not Apple Maps) got us to WJH Bird Resources with our eggs and they might be able to save them. We had a tour of the extensive grounds. We have visited numerous rescues and sanctuaries all over North and Central America. This place is very unique. It has funding from a trust and Shiela is running the organization that her father began. Her son is the third generation of animal advocates in the family. He’s working at a zoo elsewhere. I have never interacted with an organization that stayed in the family like that before or that had funding through a trust. Her methods seem very ethical and she reports a much higher release rate for her wild birds that she rehabilitates than any other rehabilitator we have ever visited. Sheila was extremely accommodating and gave us a wonderful tour tailored perfectly to my three small kids. She shared so much knowledge about the animals, regulations, organizational structure and every single question I could come up with. She also shared invaluable insight into the path that she took in her training which led to her eventual position in the organization. This is very helpful information for my budding scientist/animal loving children! And then they got to hold the “baby duckies”! It was a great day. We learned so much, saw so many special animals and enjoyed an incredibly unique and enriching experience. THANK YOU Shiel for your endless hard work for all of our wild animals and for the priceless, precious time you spent helping to educate my children! Some tips for your visit: Don’t bring dogs. Speak to small children about respecting wildlife before you arrive. Be quiet, don’t run around, it scares the animals. There aren’t really public facilities here. This is a working rescue. There are lots of animals in lots of cages, many are sick and injured. This is not a fancy, manicured Disney experience. There’s poop, mosquitos, mud, etc. Bring sturdy footwear and call ahead. Maybe Shiela is busy actually rescuing animals and you’ll need to come another day. This place isn’t about your experience, it’s about providing necessary, emergency treatment to sick and injured wildlife. And it is a truly remarkable and unique experience if you’re lucky enough to have good timing and really have a chance to see the place! We gave Shiela come cash not because she hounded us for it (as every single other rescue and sanctuary *understandably* does) but because - due mostly to those other rescues - we understand there is a real cost to (and zero funding for) wildlife rescue. I donated about what a cheap 2 hr excursion would cost me for my three kids anywhere else. I hope she gets to spend it on food for “our” eggs if they do manage to hatch! Maybe you’ll find it in your heart to make a donation too.

Sheila took in a baby Brewer’s blackbird that we found while it was being attacked by other birds. She is very dedicated and knowledgeable and we plan on going back to visit and assist with wild releases! Visit, donate, and call if you find a wild animal in need!

We found a bird in the back yard that had hurt its legs and couldn't walk. Shelia was glad to take him in and help him out. We took the full tour of the place she had such great knowledge and great stories about most of the birds.

Sheila was very helpful with an injured long billed baby curlew we have, she had expertise knowledge, very empathetic and understanding of the needs of the birds she cares for, quick witted on other organizations to call to get little Lu down to her or a place where he may have a better chance unless we are the last, Great advice on splints, hopefully we can figure out something for him, trying the metronome now for a familiar sound of his mothers heartbeat.

Shiela was amazing for helping take in one of my ducks. She has also been there when I need advise about birds or how to go about treating them. The sanctuary is a great place and I recommend getting a tour if possible and even helping out if you get the chance.
