Description Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is your destination for lost & found pets, licensing for dogs and cats, pet adoption, and humane law enforcement. MCAS cares for approximately 6,000 animals each year, 100 percent of which are from the local community. As the only open admission shelter in Portland, MCAS is a national leader with record-high save rates. In order to sustain our success in saving the lives of local animals, Animal Services relies on the Portland community to adopt, foster, volunteer, license their pets, and donate.

I understand this is a universal rule across all counties, but it's really frustrating. While working in Beaverton between 4AM and 5AM, I found a dehydrated and hungry dog, suggesting it had been out for a while. I took the dog with me since it was dark and nothing was open. I live in the Gresham-Damascus area and cannot keep the dog overnight. He's young, untrained, doesn't know any commands, and is very strong. He tries to sprint at anything that moves (including airplanes lol). Although he's friendly, he doesn't realize his strength and could accidentally hurt other pets or people. The dog has already damaged the inside of my car, so I'm not keen on transporting him back to Washington County. Despite my efforts to do the right thing, the county's response was essentially, "you're out of luck." It's really disappointing. Please contact Banfield Gresham immediately if you know this dog, his owners, or can take him. He has a microchip, was scanned at Banfield and they are looking for the owner. They have my contact info and is the regular hospital for my own dog. Maybe 2-4 years old. Found him around Baxters in Beaverton. Washington County will not pick this dog up... 😒 I don't have social media.

I recently had an experience with Multnomah County Animal Services and it was deeply disappointing. Having previously worked at an animal shelter, I understand the importance of finding the right home for each animal, but the way I was treated here was unprofessional and discriminatory. From the start, the staff on the phone was EXTREMELY hostile and inconsistent with their information. I was given different answers about the adoption process, which made it difficult to understand the requirements and expectations. Their attitude made me feel unwelcome and judged, rather than supported in finding the best fit for the dog. The gal working in the back of the shelter was helpful and kind. Again, as for the people who pick up the phone, so so so rude. It's disheartening to see a shelter that is supposed to advocate for the well-being of animals and facilitate their adoption into loving homes behave in such a manner. I hope the shelter takes this feedback seriously and works on improving their communication and treatment of potential adopters, ensuring that every animal has the chance to find a caring home.

Attempted to make a report of a dog bite that broke the skin and the lady working here refused to take a report because we didn't have the dog's address. How many people are going to be injured by a dangerous animal because the owner won't provide an address? What a waste of taxpayer money. What a waste of a job. Do better. English setter in Pearl District, with irresponsible white lady owner- be on the lookout. We will find you and make a full report. No help from this agency though.

My boyfriend and I went here yesterday to adopt our first cat together and the experience was amazing! The staff here is friendly as well as efficient and you can tell they love the animals. We were able to both find the cat we wanted and leave with her within just a few hours. The process was personable and comprehensive. We even left with free food and toys for our sweet fur baby! Definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a new furry friend!

I visited a few times and loved so many of the dogs. For my situation I narrowed it down to Axel , a 7 year old fixed male German Shepherd. He loves to play, walk, and snuggle. I am very pleased with my new companion/adventure buddy!

MCAS recklessly and irresponsibly adopted us out an intact pitbull that was dying of pneumonia. They claimed to have begun treating him for kennel cough, which every animal in the facility seemed to have, but the ER vet believes they had never begun treatment based on their own records. His pneumonia was advanced enough that it must have been occurring for days, untreated, and would have killed him soon had we not taken him to an ER vet. He had lost 10 pounds in two weeks under the care of MCAS based on their records and his weight at the time of adoption. When we contacted MCAS about the state of the dog, they lied about calling us and instead sent us an email (I assume to avoid accountability) effectively telling us to get bent, but that we could bring the dog they were slowly killing back for future services. Our ER VET said they had NEVER seen a dog adopted out in the condition that this dog was released. MCAS’s treatment of this animal was disgraceful and abusive, and their response callous. Worse than many hoarders
