Next step service dogs is an assistance dogs international (ADI) accredited training organization that provides service dogs for disabled veterans. ADI is the highest level accreditation or service animals in San Diego is very lucky to have them in our area. Next step will place an animal or will assist veterans that already have animals and need them to be trained. Next step doesn't excellent job of training The dogs to do a variety of skills and tailoring them to the specific veterans needs. Were they also do that is often overlooked is that they train the veterans in the ADA laws at etiquette while in public. They also hold the veterans to specifically standards of care for the animals. Because of this, I've gotten many compliments on my service animal in public. This also allows me to have a tremendous amount of confidence when dealing with the public and dealing with people who do not see my particular injuries. Next step is a tremendous organization, ran by tremendous people, with wonderful vets that they help.
When I first got back to San Diego it was very difficult for me to go anywhere alone, but ever since getting Driver I've gained my independence back. Gina and NSSD changed my life.
This program stands out from others I have reviewed and other service dogs I have met. They are local to San Diego and they put you in real world situations that as a service dog handler, you will have to deal with. From navigating stairs, sitting in public places, interacting with people, and of course those needs specific to the handler. It is honestly a great non-profit program and I am proud to have been a graduate.
An incredible ADI accredited service dog program for disabled veterans and first responders! Gina genuinely cares about her clients and dogs and the administration team is very organized. I'm very proud Lotus was accepted into the program and trained with them.
I waited a long time to review NSSD. First let me say that what they do is truly amazing and they do help a lot of Veterans. Why the four stars then? Well, I didn’t mark one off because I was denied. I didn’t deduct because the waiting list and process was 18+ months. The issue I have was that after getting my Oncologist, Cardiologist, Psychologist, etc. to fill out the paperwork, after meeting with their trainer Brad up in Boise (while he was working with 4-5 Veterans at the time or so it appeared as that’s how many dogs were in the VA gym at the time). After all of that, which pushed over 2 years from starting the application, I got a tentative start date of early fall because they had to find the right dog, 6 weeks I was told. Six weeks came and went. They told me that Brad needed a break. Ok, fair enough. Another month went by. Still, they couldn’t find the right dog for me. After hearing that one more time, it was clear to me that it wasn’t going to happen. See, I’m not a Veteran, I’m a former firefighter. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2012 and the chemo screwed up my autonomic system around my heart, in turn, my blood pressure drops dramatically at random times which either makes me dizzy or fall. If that wasn’t fun enough, in 2014 I was on the receiving end of a high speed rear end collision while stopped in a construction zone. In turn, TBI, concussion, post concussive syndrome and unfortunately, took me awhile to see someone for help, but ptsd. Even though they were adamant that they don’t treat first responders differently, I can’t help but think of the training of all the Veterans and their dogs while I kept being pushed back. Such is life, adapt to what you’re given and make the best of it I guess. Well, at least they got a $150 donation out of me. lol
Best place in the world.
