If you’re looking for an animal to spoil and love, do NOT go here. They let you and your children fall in love with their animals, just to gate keep and hoard their animals on some weird power trip. After waiting nearly two weeks to hear about a kitten for my son, they denied our application, after going back and forth almost every day. (Can’t you just pickup a phone and call? Or maybe ask all your questions at once, instead of one at a time in a new email?) The application got denied because my parents cat, who they only had for 4 years, did not have an “extensive enough vet history.” I don’t know how long a cats history could be when they only had the cat 4 years. I’m also not sure how my parents cats vet history would affect myself and my husband getting a kitten for our children. The shelter also wanted a death certificate or proof that their cat died, Which is so wild to me, and was nearly traumatizing to my dad, who loved their cat so much he has her ashes on the mantle in a personalized box. I had to keep asking my dad for the name of the animal hospital where she died, what day, and what was cause of death, etc, which was very upsetting to him. I feel bad for any animal stuck at Wayne animal shelter, they’re the ones getting punished because of these over-achieving, power-tripping gatekeepers.
We got our first cat there in October 2022, and because I love him so much and thought he needed a friend. I went back 2 weeks ago and got him one. The staff was very helpful, and I would definitely recommend going and adopting a little cutie for yourself. My King Louis & Binx are happy and healthy! Update, I am in the process of adopting my 3rd 😺 kitty from the shelter, and yes, I needed one more...lol. fingers 🤞! The wait is the hardest part.
This has to be one of the cleanest animal shelters I’ve ever been to. The animals look like they’ve been taken such good care of & the cats are such sweethearts! You do have to submit an adoption application & wait about a week but it’s honestly worth it for these cuties!
Having issues with their responsiveness as I've seen others have had. The day after taking 2 cats home I sent the staff a picture of them letting them know they were settling in and getting along. I received an immediate thank you and a request for permission to post the pictures I sent to their FB page. However, within the next 2 days I discovered one of them had blood in the urine. That's when the shelter manager became unresponsive. They responded to one inquiry when I required about the health history of Olivia, the cat with the issue, but then nothing! Despite leaving voice messages and emails letting them know about the diagnosis and proposed treatment plan from a vet, I could not get a response. It's just simple courtesy to return a call. I was following their own adoption contract to call if assistance is needed. ADDITION TO INITIAL REVIEW: It is March, and since adopting 2 cats in October have not received the courtesy of a response from the shelter after. All I wanted was to discuss my options with the shelter manager. The lack of response was discourteous and disrespectful. I deserved a call back. UPDATE on the 2 cats adopted there. The male, Cobbler, who I was told needed special food for having a sensitive stomach, does not have a sensitive stomach at all and is doing well. He is the brown tabby you see in the pics. Olivia I was told just had a conjunctivitis type issue with her eyes that would probably clear up once she was out of the shelter, came home with a UTI and bladder stones and the conjunctivitis they thought she had and was being treated with an antibiotic cream for was actually the herpes virus. ** I found the shelter clean and the staff very friendly, but obviously something went wrong with these 2 little guys. This review is not to gain sympathy, or make me out to be a hero in deciding to keep them. I was willing to take in special needs pets, however, my understanding of their needs as shared by the staff there was off. I had the choice to surrender them back and it was my mistake in thinking the manager would care enough to call back when I reached out several times to help. My review is based squarely on the management of this shelter. I applaud the wonderful volunteers that work tirelessly every day for these animals and fully understand the budgetary restraints on a municipal shelter. However, there is NO EXCUSE for a manager to NOT return a phone call especially under these circumstances. If you truly want to rescue an animal get out there to your municipal shelters. The manager here should ashamed, but the animals not pay the price for it. ***If you are looking for a single cat, PLEASE consider adopting Svetlana. She has a wonderful personality and loved being held. She was tucked in the back room of the shelter. HIV cats can live a long life. If you have the ability to take home a HIV cat, Svetlana is sweet. I would have taken her home myself, but I wanted 2 cats. I still think of her every day and was saddened to see recently that she is still at the shelter.
This is by far the worst experience I’ve had with a shelter ever. I didn’t want to believe the reviews but everyone is absolutely right. First off, I had to email them and call them every week to get any kind of update. Each time I called there was something new I had to mail in that they “forgot to mention”. After a full month and multiple visits they finally emailed me back only to tell me my application was denied. The reasoning ?Simply because one of my references was on vacation and could not call back right away and the other one was either written down incorrectly ( my fault I admit it) or dialed incorrectly. Regardless, I sent them the correct number and my other reference managed to called them back. They still denied my application and would not allow me to reprocess just because of a simple mistake! I have been more than understanding when it came to their late responses and have made sure to be prepared every step of the way. I would have loved to provide that kitty with a loving home but this shelter clearly does not care about that. PLEASE FIND ANOTHER SHELTER AND AVOID THIS ONE AT ALL COST.
NEVER EVER go here. UPDATE: now the woman is calling my household a day later to tell me I am "ruining the entire animal shelter" and said "no one wanted your cat". Might I remind you I believe calling my personal phone number to raise ones voice at me would be considered harassment. I would also like to note other human beings left reviews of this same animal shelter and I quote some of them - "This shelter should be shut down. " "It was a joke" "there were at least 4 people milling around with attitudes" somehow with those great reviews I - an 18 year old girl - am destroying and ruining an entire animal shelter as this MIDDLE AGED woman claimed - so childish. I beg of you to not scream at a teenage girl and call my home but instead take that same time to do your job. Unless u enjoy the police being called on you or being yelled at then do not go here. I bought a pet here in 2016 and she was a lovely cat. Unfortunately she was bullied by the other pets in my home and needs to be the only pet in a house - it is unfair to her. So we called and after nine days of no response or the hostile working telling us to wait for her supervisor we decided to just take the cat down there. They refused to take her and when we said we had no place else to go the worker called the police. The police were MORE understanding than her and found our side fair but they still could not do anything. Then she told my father that we would have to wait and when they decide to take her they would "Just kill her anyways" in her words. A SICK woman as this cat is healthy and adorable. They waisted 9 days of our lives and two hours of our day today. I have never met such a rude woman - especially one who seemed to not care AT ALL about the animals. I only hope she actually treats the animals in that shelter correctly and feeds them when she is supposed to as she does not seem to care about the health of any animal. Once again sick and disgusting so unfortunate to have cruel people in this world next to such beautiful animals who do not deserve that. Also wasting police time when there could be a true emergency - childish of her. This entire place needs to get its act together and I see that in the other reviews too.
