Description Hawaii Island Humane Society is a private non-profit animal welfare organization operating two animal shelters on the island of Hawai'i. Our shelter locations include The Animal Community Center in Kona (Holualoa) and the Keaau Shelter. Both shelters are open for walk-in visits daily from 10am-3pm, except on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Shelters are home to adoptable dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Each shelter has a retail shop where you can purchase toys, treats, leashes, collars, and more and 100% of the profits go directly to support the animals. Come visit our shelters to meet our adoptable animals, learn more about our programs and services, and shop in our retail shops. Your support is greatly appreciated!

We needed to put our Doberman down and called the humane society for end of life services. They were very nice and accommodating, very sensitive to what was going on for us. Would highly recommend. Cost is $25. We took her back home with us and buried her in her favorite spot in our yard.

I love the dog for a day program( I think they call it something else) that allows people to get a shelter dog out of the shelter for the day, it’s awesome. The cleanliness of the kennels was questionable at best. however the receptionists were all very friendly and helpful. And the doggies are always awesome always. They give you treats to give the dogs when you walk through. I hope Gremmie gets adopted soon. She is an awesome well mannered small dog.

Visited this facility today for the first time and was very impressed! You could feel the love all the workers had for the animals, trying to give them all as much love and attention as they can until they find their forever homes. They seem to have just enough animals that they can provide adequate care to and I appreciate that they know when they are at their max, as they are currently not accepting any more dogs. Please please please consider getting your next pet from here instead of purchasing it from either a licensed or backyard breeder!! There are sooooo many perfect and loving animals that are deserving of happy homes and full lives. I wish I could take them all home, but I know when the time comes for me to get another dog I will 100% be coming here after seeing how many perfect angels there are ready for adoption. Clean facilities, great workers, great mission. Do anything you can to support them- even just donate!

Today I saw silly dogs including a fuzzy white one and one that is the color of a chocolate chip cookie. The staff was hard at work cleaning the kennels and greeting visitors. In the cat house is the most beautiful, friendly little blue eyed cat. I think they call her Bubbles. She talks! I hope she finds a loving home soon.

Wonderful experience getting our kitten neutered. Affordable care. A real gem. Just make sure to get on the wait list early enough so your kitty doesn't start spraying.

The Hawaii Island Humane Society also has a Bark Park! This is an off leash dog park facility open to the public. Although it is a smaller off leash park, it is well maintained and offers a variety of exploration for canines. There is an area for smaller dogs and a separate area for midsize to larger dogs. Toys are available as well as a water tub, fire hydrant, water hose, pavilion, trees, and taller foliage areas. I brought my 30# Staffordshire Bull Terrier here and he had a blast. Be aware that you MUST be cognizant of your own dogs behavior. If they are overwhelmed, simply take your dog out. Don't forget to clean up after your pooch and don't bring your furry loved one if they are sick, injured, or in heat. Before coming to any dog park, be sure to keep up with canine vaccinations and preventative meds. The risk is always there for spreading illness.
