Description Property hours as well as breezeway bathrooms are open to public use from 1 hour before to 1 hour after sunrise/sunset Monday through Sunday. Visitor center is open Tuesday-Saturday 9AM - 4PM. Please use the new driveway to enter the refuge and park in the new parking lot. Valle de Oro NWR is a designated Urban NWR. Valle de Oro was a former dairy farm and is still currently in agricultural fields on a majority of the property. Long-term Refuge plans are to make the refuge into a mosaic of native Middle Rio Grande Valley habitats and an oasis to both wildlife and people. At this refuge, staff, partners, and the community are collaboratively building a refuge from scratch, keeping in mind wildlife, people, environmental justice, and more.

What a wonderful space! I didn't even check out the visitor center inside since I didn't think to bring a lock for my bike. I did ride the Bosque Loop trail and it was gorgeous! Easy enough to bring the kiddos, but definitely interesting enough for adults! Beautiful land dotted with lovely art, right on the south edge of town, totally accessible by bicycle! I rode up from the Bosque multi use path on a whim last Saturday and just couldn't stop snapping pics! Do yourself a favor and stop by, you won't regret it! I'll be back and next time I'll bring a lock 😊

Beautiful facilities with friendly staff. Trails all around the building and a great deck for bird watching. They have an awesome kids zone and a cute gift shop. Plenty of shade to come and enjoy a picnic and informative postings all around to help educate us. Short walk to bosque.

Such a beautiful place. Love how intentional they are from the murals throughout including this beautiful one by Haley Greenfeather English to even having a library with books by indigenous authors. Can’t wait to continue to visit as the native habits and ecosystems continue to thrive.

TRAVELERS: I am really thankful to have stopped here and learn about one of the newest additions to the urban space people call home. I highly suggest this gem to anyone who has not had the chance to visit this beautiful space next to the Rio Grande. Nature Store hours in the Refuge are from 10-4 Tuesday-Saturday. There are wonderful events open for all, including Sip and paint(remember to register via email) and also a chance to meet some of the most caring humans yhat have worked endless hours to provide a little part of mother Earth. Thank you for amazing and clean facilities that also provide DRINKING water next to the restrooms. Take the time to go around the little path before you take the trails as there are very cool signs with information about the conservancy program and how we can take part in our communities to also help the environment. The art is by local female artists and tell the stories of love and dedication for our Environment.

Beautiful facility and really great staff. We have been loving Nature Tots and look forward to future events! Also great rainy day activities. Custom bosque building blocks that our little one loves!

Wonderful spot, free entry, to walk or jog or hike, or even bird watch. I saw a beautiful western meadowlark! Returned to the new facility/ visitor center on 8/27/22- spectacular!! Open and a beautifully done welcome center. Friendly employees, moderate walk(2.6 miles to Bosque and back), paved or well marked. Open for walks or especially nice paved bike trails 365 days a year!!
