Had my first experience with VCA and I have to applaud them! Immediately upon walking in you see how beautiful their facility is. Very warm and inviting, let alone clean. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Our doctor was Monica Capella, DVM and she was extremely kind and knowledgeable. Having a hedgehog, it’s not an extremely average pet haha. She had all of the knowledge and finesse needed to assure me that I had the right doctor for my little girl. Admittedly we waited a bit too long to bring her in to get her nails trimmed. One was a bit too long and started growing inward. She did not make us feel judged at all and handled everything perfectly. We were sent home with great information and assurance that we can schedule any additional services whenever we want and not everything had to be done that day. I really appreciate all of the amazing customer service, knowledge, and care!
This vet seemed good at first & everyone we met was always very nice, but we started to have a lot of issues with their incompetence & absurd pricing. - One of our cats gets anxious at the vet & they kept her in the back room for almost 40 minutes- where we could hear her getting increasingly upset- only to come out and tell us that they weren’t able to get the blood draw. There was no reason to hold her back there for so long when it was apparent she wasn’t going to cooperate & she ended up really distressed for the next several days - They charged us for a test only to tell us that we needed to come back & have it done again (both getting the sample & paying more) because they used their own less-sensitive equipment instead of sending it straight to the lab that had proper equipment, so they got an inconclusive result - They tried to convince us to get a different $300 test that they openly said would almost certainly give an inconclusive result - And the final straw was when we paid over $1000 for a physical/blood draw/ear treatment when every other vet in the area quoted us $500-700 when we brought our receipt to them
I had adopted a female leopard gecko from an acquaintance the week prior to the vet appointment I had made for her. She was in poor shape from the previous owners’ lack of knowledge of proper care, and I had decided to have Dr. Capella take a look to make sure my little gecko was alright. Dr. Capella knows I keep a small jungle of exotics at home, and was familiar with my pet rabbit from a previous appointment. I had decided to take on the care of yet another in-need exotic, as if I didn’t adopt her from her previous owner, she would have gone on facebook’s marketplace (according to her previous owner). As I’ve not owned reptiles before, I did as much unbiased research as I possibly could and spent several hundred dollars on making sure my little Philippa (leopard gecko) was comfortable in her new home. Armed with nothing but hope, I took Philippa to the vet after a long day of work. Philippa was not in good condition at all from her previously poor care, and it had caused a terminal domino effect. I was suggested euthanasia as an option, rather than allow her to die slowly from the inside. I agreed with this option. This was my very first time euthanizing a pet as an adult, and I was a shipwreck of emotions. Dr. Capella and team on shift took such gentle care of me. I can’t describe the level of comfort I had felt in mourning this tiny life cut short when the vet tech offered her kind gentle words, when the receptionist sat down next to me on the bench to show me urn options, comforting me with kind words, and when Dr. Capella went above and beyond to describe leopard gecko heaven, how Philippa’s last moments were pure bliss for her as she was cradled and spoken lovingly to. Compassion is a word lost upon society, but not here. I’m so glad I had decided to choose VCA Calvert, and I will every time.
Edit: It is March 2023 and Stanley is still going strong. I have attached new photos from our recent trip to Florida. Stanley has been doing great for a long time and is no where near death like this hospital claimed. I was delayed in writing this review for personal reasons. But I can strongly suggest going to another VCA hospital. I paid $700 for supplies and blood work. The blood work was clean and the doctors and vet assistant wanted me to shell out thousands more for a cat they said might died soon. Also, the ladies who were attending to Stanley were shady. They kept checking the microchip of my newly adopted cat and talked about how much they wanted to keep him. So which is? Is my cat dying or are you trying to steal him? In the end, Stanley is doing amazing. I am not sure what caused his illness where he was vomiting for four days. All of the medication didn't work. Stanley is a super friendly cat who loves everyone. But he hated these ladies with good reason. He lets me brush his teeth and cut his nails with no issues. When the ladies tried to exam him, he attacked them because they didn't have his best interest at heart. Today, my chubby little 7-year-old cat is living his best life. He eats sensitive stomach dry cat food and eats regular wet patties with no issues. I feel like this location was a waste of money and time. They took two hours because they kept trying to confirm Stanley was rightfully my cat even though I had documentation from Animal Control confirming he belonged to me. Also, the vet assistance was always rudely over talking and the vet was literally writing Stanley off as a cat who could have all these deadly diseases and they told me stories of owners finding their cat day within a day. This location is not the place to go at all. Well, Stanley is here to stay and regain the pounds he loss from that incident. I am still not sure what caused it but he has been improving since I went to this location nearly a month ago. I will visit another VCA hospital when I need assistance in the future. He is a holiday miracle who gets nothing but the best from me.
A clean and welcoming veterinary office. The receptionist was friendly and respectful. It was the first time my girlfriend has ever taken a pet to the vets (her first pets as well, cats). The vet assistant was smart and took great care and attention to both cats. One waa friendly and curious and the other was afraid ans laid on top of blankets in a basket, thinking he was hidden haha. They got their first ever checkup and the vet said they were fat and wanted them to bee put on special food. Ive had many cats all of my life, and these two definitely are not fat cats at all. One is a ragamuffin and the other is a domestic shorthair cat. Neither one are big and theyre both active and playful and have no visible health issues at all. The vet wanted to charge 96 each for the visit, but my girlfriend is smart and she found a free 1st time checkup promo for both cats. Anyways, great friendly staff and a vet who of course wanted to shove nonsense to the pet owners.
I waited a few weeks to post this review. The doctors said my cat would be dead. They said he had a heart condition. They were very unprofessional. They were telling me stories about other owners whose cats had died. I paid a lot of money for medical food and blood work. The blood work came back with no issues. My cat didn't like what he was given. No refunds, though. Also, the team seemed to spend a great deal of time checking up on my cat's microchip. They called him a stray. I got him from the animal control shelter about two weeks before the visit and had the paperwork to prove everything. Anyway, I can say with a heavy heart that....my cat is alive and thriving. Stanley is living his best life. He gets unconditional love and gourmet (or, in other words - expensive) foods. He snuggles with me each morning when I wake up. He never misses a meal. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. They kept saying all the worst-case scenarios like cancer, heart issues, etc. They were a waste of money. I would recommend another VCA hospital. One that lets you talk freely and doesn't interrupt you when you speak. Hint: the vet assistance. And get a vet who isn't feeding you dooms day messages like the lady I saw was. Here are some photos from this week of my chunky baby boy.
