I live on a small farm with a multitude of gardens and animals. I respect that I'm carving out a section of the environment for my home and do everything in power to coexist with nature. With that said, I noticed a fox trotting around my duck and chicken coops so I kept a close eye on the situation. Then 2 days ago I noticed a kit (baby fox) sitting alone by my hay bales. I watched it for a bit and determined it may have been orphaned (I haven't seen mom in a while). I, not being an expert in fox behavior, called Wildlife Wishing Well to ask if it was normal behavior. The person who answered CLEARLY didn't care about what I was saying. As soon as I said I lived on a farm he wrote me off. "The fox looks dirty and unkempt." His response- "kids get dirty" "I'm concerned that something is wrong." His response- "Most city folk would enjoy seeing a fox in the yard, enjoy it." He asked "Do you know where the den is?" Me- "Yes, I think it’s by my duck coop which is concerning." Him- "Well the fox needs to eat too." I could go on. Well. Unfortunately I was right, I found the poor babe dead today. Not attacked or anything, so it leads me to believe it was orphaned like I suspected. I'm new to the area and found this person just with Google... so I'm here on Google to save the next person from making the mistake of calling them.
The gentleman that picked up was somewhat rude and patronizing about our concern for a young squirrel that was shaking and approaching us as though it needed something. It would even follow us and climb up on our legs. I am thankful for the advice and knowledge that we received, but he made it seem like it was a bad thing for us to care about the animal. Not much of a wildlife center, not much of a genuine human being either. I'd recommend you go elsewhere for any services you need. Find somewhere with actual compassion and passion for wildlife.
I called Wildlife Wishing Well and spoke with Richard. He was very helpful! There were 6 baby skunks in the basement windowwell at my father's house. They were very small and no mother had been seen coming to care for them. Richard also gave me the number to contact DEC, however, there were no officers available that day. I called Richard back and he sent someone to pick up the babies. THANK YOU! They will be rehabed and release!
I called because i needed quick advice on what to do about a baby bunny that my cat had bulled. The person who picked up was incredibly helpful and kind and calmed me down. He told me what to do and how to do it. Very professional and even made lighthearted jokes to help ease the situation.
I hate leaving bad reviews, and I have never left a single one. I know people have bad days, businesses have bad days. I called because I found four baby bunnies in my fenced in backyard where my two big dogs run around. Their eyes were closed, they looked healthy apart from a very small laceration on the back of one. I know you should always return them to their nest but there was no way I could without my dogs getting to them and hurting them. This is why I called here. I was desperate and wanted help/advice. The man who answered says "Now you're probably going to get mad and this will sound sarcastic, but you caused the problem and now you expect someone else to get up every two hours with them." (I also know baby bunnies only eat once a day, maybe twice, then their mothers stay away from the nest) But anyway.... I said no I absolutely do not want to put this responsibly on anybody else, I just was looking for some advice. He tells me to put them back and maybe my dogs will just nuzzle them. I told him there's no way my dogs will possibly leave them alone unharmed but if you're really telling me to put them back I will. (I never was gonna put them back in harm's way). I called Colonial and they were so sweet and helpful, they gave me a list of rehabbers, put me in contact with a Lori Wheeler from Wellsburg who was also nothing but sweet and helpful. She took them from me, has an incubator and said she has had a lot of good luck with baby bunnies. I wasn't mad how I was spoken to more than I was stunned. I work at an animal hospital and I can't even imagine talking to clients or customers in that manner. You're a wildlife rehab center, I thought you'd at least be there to guide people in the right direction. Again this is the one and only time I've called here, maybe other workers are nice and helpful and I really hope so, cause this man was not.
Richard was unprofessional, rude, and attacking over the phone. He mad a lot of incorrect assumptions within the first 10 seconds of the call. He stated that he’d feed the baby animals that I had found to his fox if I brought them to his business. I wouldn’t trust giving a living creature to him; he clearly doesn’t care. There are far better places to trust wildlife with in this area than his.
