Description The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, founded in 1883, is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama. Over the course of our history we have witnessed the changes in our community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips “to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services.”

I wish I could give less than one star. I have always supported GBHS and even adopted from them in the past, but I am truly disappointed in their Animal Care and Control. I have rescued several dogs myself along Lakeshore because I’m told it is Birmingham and they don’t pickup in that area. I am then transferred to someone else that does not speak English enough to put in the report. GBHS asks for donations and support but the Care and Control center is failing. I believe that should be discussed on the news instead of appearances for donations because clearly it isn’t helping with picking up animals. The Snow Drive location is right next to Lakeshore but instead civilians, like myself, are having to attempt to get these dogs and drive them to Animal Care and Control near the airport. Make it make sense? It should not be a major news story for an animal to be cared for enough to pickup.

After attempting to adopt a kitten that was listed as available on their website, I then visited the location and tried to get paperwork started, but once arrived, I was informed that the cat that I wanted was being transferred. However, it was not just only available on the website, but also at the specific location. I was informed that I could not have the information as to where it was going or for them to even try to have the common courtesy to reach out to that shelter to ask if I could just adopt the cat that was already in house . This was very personal as I connected with this kitten and unfortunately was not able to take it home. Once a worker came and noticed that the cat had not been “pulled off the floor fast enough”, she then saw that I was holding the cat and asked for it out of my hands to remove it from everyone’s view. It was very disappointing to say the least and also discouraging moving forward in regards to adopting any animal here. I think more could’ve been done in regards to this situation and how to handle it rather than being so harsh and offering no other solution. I think if the opportunity to find out where this kitten was being transported was relayed, I could then maybe understand more however not only will they not let you adopt the cats, but they will NOT tell you where it’s going if you did decide you wanted to follow it in order to adopt it. Once again if I could give zero stars, I would. I am very disappointed with this in this experience and even more disappointed because as hard as it is to form a connection with an animal and then once you try to adopt it to be told no and that there’s “nothing” they can do about it when there is and they just won’t. If the opportunity were presented to still adopt this sweet boy I would take it. Hopefully someone from corporate or with a decent heart will reach out.

They are amazing. Everyone is so genuine and loving. They care so much for these little souls. We went not really intending to go home with a little angel. But as fate would have it. This angel chose us. He's one not a ''puppy''. But not fully adult. He is acute at deciphering humans. Which totally blew me away. He is already so protective of us. We had a little trouble naming him. But we settled on Spencer.

My kids and I had never had any pets long term. Luckily for my family GBHS had a February special. After much prayer, consideration. I decided to adopt a kitten. Our Kitty baby Junie B Moon has been a joy to have, also light on some dark days from grief. I pray that her siblings are loved, safe and taken care of! Thanks GBHS FOR BLESSING MY FAMILY.

Very clean place! The animals looked cared for and happy. They take in many dogs and a few cats and smaller animals like guinea pigs. Staff wasn’t very attentive or helpful . I constantly had to ask for help. Still had a great time and enjoyed my visit. Support your local humane society!

I would like to apologize I recently left a review at a time when I was very upset and should not have left my review without having a cool head. My experience and there was kind of upsetting to me at the time because I felt like they didn't care but after a cool down I realized that they're doing their jobs and they have more animals than any person could ever imagine come through I'm sure and I'm sure everybody their does their best to be of service to these animals so thank you so much
