Description Gig Harbor's Local Dog Rescue - CHEW Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned dogs, dogs scheduled for euthanasia due to shelter space limitations, and other dogs who need us. Since the start of CHEW as a rescue organization, we have rescued and saved over 1,300 dogs in 10 years. We are always looking to find additional foster homes and acquire funding for other essential elements of dog rescue to allow us to help more dogs in need. CHEW (Canine Health Education and Welfare) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. We also promote responsible dog ownership including canine health and behavioral topics.

Chew is one of 3 groups we were working with to adopt. Although an adoption we’d applied for earlier came through, we were very happy with Chew and would highly recommend them. Adoption team member was very quick to respond, friendly and eager to help us. When the dog we were interested in was adopted, a team member let us know immediately, got more info on our preferences and suggested some potential matches. The application was in depth, asked some great questions and requested references along with our vets info. All good things to look for in the adoption process as they indicate this group truly cares for these animals and finding the right match is a priority. We’ve had rescue dogs for the past 40hrs and have worked with several adoption groups; Chew stands out among these groups hands down!

We adopted our Sophi from CHEW. They are lovely people that are in it for the dogs. They worked with us to find the right dog. The adoption fee is very reasonable. We highly recommend them if you're looking to rescue a great dog. They have many fosters and work to get to know the dogs so they place them with the right people to be forever homes.

Chew dog rescue volunteers are Angels. They helped me rehome 2 rescues to the perfect forever home. They were so thorough to make sure pet and adoptive owners are a safe and healthy match. I’ve taken in quite a few dogs from older people who have passed away or put in a home. I appreciate how Chew pairs pets with age appropriate owners. (A puppy with an elderly person is never is a good idea) God Bless you Chew!!

We were very disappointed in our experience with Chew Dog Rescue. We dropped everything on a Friday afternoon to accommodate the foster family and the owner(?) of Chew for a meet + greet. The entire visit was uncomfortable and I definitely felt tricked. I don't think they felt our dog was a good match for the dog we were hoping to adopt, so the Chew representative casually dropped that they "have another family meet + greet the following week for the dog". She never told me this, and I think this was her way of getting rid of us. Very unprofessional and it hurt my feelings. I will not be back! I appreciate clear and honest communication, not games. I understand being an animal rescue volunteer can be demanding and difficult. I still think they could have done better.

We had a wonderful experience with Chew, but fair warning—they are extremely thorough with their rescue process and it can take a little while, but in the end you will end up with a dog that is suitable for you. They do thorough background checks (checking references) and do a home check (with Covid that was online) to make sure that you are a suitable fit for the dog you want to take home. Their rescue fees are extremely reasonable (in my opinion, they could raise them to cover their costs). They did a DNA check to see what the breed of our dog was. We saw photos of our dog online (her name was Addie, but we changed it to Gracie) and seeing her expression, it was love at first sight. Getting a puppy like Gracie has been challenging (since she's a Husky/German Shepard mix, we are starting training as soon as we can). We are already in love with her—she is quite the rascal!

CHEW is doing a tremendous job under very difficult circumstances. They work hard to save adoptable dogs from high kill shelters and even provide local emergency fosters when they can. They're extremely dedicated to the dogs and are always looking out for the dog's and the adopter's best interests. I've fostered twice for CHEW and it's been the most rewarding experience. Also, they're selective about their adopters so these dogs never experience another heartbreaking transition again if things don't work out. CHEW is a great organization to foster for, volunteer with, and especially adopt from. ❤
