Description All the staff, volunteers, and donors affiliated with the York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) love animals, and we want to save as many animal lives as possible. We do this work because we believe in our mission of providing long-term human and animal services to residents of York County through programs that find permanent, loving homes for stray and displaced animals. Every day we work hard towards helping control the animal population growth rates, investigating and prosecuting animal cruelty offenders, and educating the public about animal wellness and safety. We operate a high-quality/low-cost spay/ neuter clinic. More info and hours are available on our website.

Adopting our new family member was an amazing experience! We applied quickly online after going in during normal visiting hours to view available dogs and doing some research on the dogs on their website. We noticed how clean the shelter was and how the staff clearly cared for the animals. We also saw dogs being walked by volunteers, playing in outdoor kennels and being given treats. We received a call within a day or so to review the application, discuss the dog and to make sure he was a fit for the family. A meeting was scheduled a few days out so that all family members could meet the dog. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Although the shelter was extremely busy that day, we interacted with several professional and knowledgeable employees and volunteers who helped us with the meeting, reviewing med information, completing paperwork, and taking pictures. It was such a smooth process and all of the employees and volunteers were absolutely wonderful and provided helpful tips for the first few days and months after adoption. After we got home, we more carefully reviewed the dogs history and medical record and noticed the extraordinary veterinary care he received during his 3 month stay at the shelter. Kudos to the YSPCA for all of the work they do with the animals to keep them well taken care of, getting them ready for adoption and working with adopters.
Very poor customer service and disorganized. We have adopted 5 dogs over the years, and keep going back for the dogs that need help not because of the staff. This last encounter was the final straw, the person I was dealing with about a potential adoption was rude and combative. I was questioning the logic of something she was saying and I wasn’t being rude or raising my voice at all and she tells me “sir I don’t want to have to ask you to leave”. I could have chalked it up to her having a bad day but having dealt with her before and seeing her interact with other people this is her demeanor, not engaging and egotistical, which isn’t a very good combination when 80% of your position involves customer service. I was completely shocked by her whole disdain for me, after so many years of adopting and supporting the SPCA. There have been very nice and helpful people working here that I have encountered over the years but they never seem to last, now I know why, I wouldn’t want to work around people as negative and toxic as this individual. It is really a shame, it is a beautiful facility and community support is there for them but until they get effective leadership where there can be valid and lasting improvement the animals will be the ones to suffer.
adopted a brother and sister from them, they were very transparent about what the kittens will need and when since they were too young to be fully vaccinated. The kitties love snuggling together and have taken to my other cats so fast! Thank you to the staff for all you do for these cats and dogs!
Myself, my grown sons, and my husband at the time, adopted Jazz, a senior pomeranian poodle, 5 years ago from the shelter. His former pet parent moved to a place that didn't allow pets (I hope they read this, 'cause Jazzy had a good life!). He was the best doggone dog. He loved long relaxing baths. After his bath, we would wrap him in a towel and say he was a 'manger dog'. Then we would turn him loose to zoom all over the living room. He recently got older and his health declined, and last month we had to put him to sleep. As much as we miss him, I am grateful to the SPCA for bringing us together. Always will be. Joy
Went to see about getting a sibling for our dog after veiwing selection online very weird experience wanted my dog to meet and choose prospective new family member was met with quite a bit of resistance somehow unbeknownst to me I offended the person helping me. The manager Glori did come speak to me which I appreciated very much, just feel one of the dogs available missed out on a great life due to some misunderstanding that I was oblivious too. Hope all find a home as loving as the would have with our family.
The local SPCA is always a pleasant visit. Our visit was for the spay/neuter clinic. Awesome. Just plan ahead if your critters need fixed. They're about a month & 1/2 out. You can also order a year's worth of flea & tick medicine.
