Description Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) was established as the first city pound on June 5, 1902. Since then, it has served as the only open-admission public animal shelter in the City of Richmond. We provide humane care for more than 3,000 stray, sick, injured, and relinquished pets per year. Our Animal Control unit investigates animal cruelty, enforces humane laws, and issues pet licenses/permits. These services include the enforcement of City ordinances related to animals, removal of killed or injured animals/wildlife, impoundment of stray pets, and investigation of animal-related neglect, cruelty, nuisance, and bite cases.
I am an insurance adjuster for Allstate and found three kittens found at a property while doing a site visit. Two were feisty but the third one was not doing well and they took it to the back right away. They showed a lot of compassion during the intake procedure.
I have had a wonderful experience with RACC. We adopted a puppy who they described beautifully and looked for a home that suited his needs and a special rooster on the same day. Both are doing great!
I took a kitten that I found in my back yard here I hopes that they could find it a home. They paired it with another kitty and sent me a picture of how well it was doing! The staff was extremely nice and helpful, and it was nice to have the update to know that our uninvited friend was doing so well!
The lady at the front with the baseball cap is extremely rude. We have been twice looking for an animal to adopt the SAME DAY and were basically turned away. It was an excuse on why we couldn't even see the animal in a room each time. I get precautions but she didn't seem like she even wanted to conversate with us. She was staring at her computer the whole time typing as we were asking questions. Just very odd experience and we won't be coming back. We normally adopt from the SPCA and will continue to go there.
These people really, really love animals. We got a tour through the whole place! We told them what we were looking for and they found us our sweet boy River!
The Richmond Animal Care & Control facility is a great place to adopt pets from, volunteer at, and foster animals from. Anybody I have come in contact with has always been helpful and respectful of my “silly questions”. I adopted my baby boy April 2023, almost a year later and I can confidently say my life as well as his, is forever changed. I wish I could support shelters in more ways than I do, especially this one. If I had one “complaint” it would be that I wish they had some type of included pet health care for those adopted from their shelter (which they may, but I know I couldn’t get it when he needed it, and I know Richmond vets are generally booked up for months so it might not be their fault).
