The Richmond Animal Care & Control facility is a great place to adopt pets from, volunteer at, and foster animals from. Anybody I have come in contact with has always been helpful and respectful of my “silly questions”. I adopted my baby boy April 2023, almost a year later and I can confidently say my life as well as his, is forever changed. I wish I could support shelters in more ways than I do, especially this one. If I had one “complaint” it would be that I wish they had some type of included pet health care for those adopted from their shelter (which they may, but I know I couldn’t get it when he needed it, and I know Richmond vets are generally booked up for months so it might not be their fault).
I came here looking for a companion for my current dog. I looked and found a dog I thought would be good, but when the meetup came they weren’t vibing too great. So the staff had a suggestion, and brought out another dog (Jitterbug, who’s new name is Sadie!), who although usually doesn’t like male dogs- she did good with my boy! They cat tested her, to ensure she wasn’t reactive- as I have a few cats at home. Everyone involved was VERY helpful!!! The adoption process was not nearly as difficult as most places in RVA. Our new baby is doing great and I can’t thank everyone involved enough! I would highly recommend adopting from here!
It is so disheartening to see ANY negative reviews about RACC. As much as they are on tv whining about wanting more people to adopt, you would think they would be super nice to everyone at all times. No wonder their shelter is almost at full capacity !!! Maybe treat people better, put aside the prejudices, and more people would want to do business with you. After reading about how they treat people of color, I certainly will not do business with them. For the love of the animals, RACC, DO BETTER !!!
They were very accommodating and took the time to tell me about all 4 dogs I got to meet. They were detailed and thorough, also giving me their written evaluation and assessment of the dog I took home. They clearly go above and beyond for these animals and are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Here’s the good boy I took home, Rupert. Thanks RACC 🐾!!
Went to do a meet and greet with our babies for a hopeful new family member. Staff made us put on choker leashes on our well behaved dogs and would not let us handle them. That’s fair from a liability stand point BUT to keep pulling and tugging on our dogs was unacceptable. You can’t force them towards a new dog while cutting off oxygen supply. They were nasty to our babies and I pray they treat there wards with more care. Never going back.
We adopted a 6 month old mix with pitbull. It is obvious that this puppy was trained to a good extent already and treated with love and kindness. I have no concerns about having a pitbull mix.. I have seen him respectfully play and not be triggered when other dogs play rough and growl or lunge at the throat.. this puppy is always able to listen and learn.
