The lady in the front was nice. The place is really clean and neat except for the sad noises and smells when you arrive. Just dogs barking, crying trying to get attention. A lot of the dogs are so depressed looking. I'm not sure why they don't take them outside for a bathroom break, each stall had poop in it which means they've been in their cells for hours, when I came in to see them at 3:00P.M. It has an eerie feel, like an animal prison full of cages. The cats are in small kennels and they are creatures of running and jumping around and need space. Thank God only about half of the spots were full with dogs because I'm pretty sure this is a kill shelter. I hope they're doing everything they can to get them all adopted.
I had recently rescued a female pit bull and couldn't find a good home for her, especially after the terrible wake due to Hurricane Helen. I had to make a decision to keep her and they helped to provide leash, harness, food and treats. A personal thank you to Walita, she made me feel so much comfort in my situation.
This shelter specifically is a high volume shelter and I know workers do the very best they can BUT please make sure the correct microchip numbers are listed. I drove 2.5 hours last week to adopt this sweet boy. I registered the microchip number provided on my adoption paperwork. My vet discovered that was not the correct number. They even called 24Hr Pet watched who confirmed that as well. ANYONE who adopts from this location verify your pets chip number!!!
I just rescued a puppy from here. Staff was welcoming and very helpful. Especially the volunteers. All the staff seem very passionate about what they do and want to make sure you get a pet that fits you and your home! Thanks for all of your support. Hudson is happy to find a home! :)
Update: The rabbit I adopted from them was ill and I did not realize it until I had driven home. I took her to the vet the next day and they informed me that she had a respiratory infection. I contacted CMPD animal control to inform them since it was contagious. Dr. Fisher was very gracious and reimbursed the vet visit. Fast forward 8 months later and hundreds of dollars spent. The infection was chronic. I reached out again and I was reimbursed again but I was told that they would not continue to reimburse me. Ultimately, after trying 4 different antibiotics, the infection did become resistant and she did pass away after stealing my heart. š I would not discourage you from adopting from here but please pay close to their physical state and not just how precious they are before adopting. Iām very pleased with the staff and my sweet little bunny I adopted there. They are short staffed, but they are trying their best!
The staff at this shelter are great people and I so appreciate their commitment to finding these animals homes. I could definitely feel that the energy in the shelter was tense from people coming to the shelter with bad attitudes. I applaud the staff for having to put up with those kinds of people. The young lady who assisted me in adopting my beautiful rabbit was so kind and I appreciated her telling me everything she knew about the rabbit and giving me information about other rabbits that were up for adoption. The adoption process was easy and efficient. I am giving the establishment 3 stars instead of 5 because the shelter's documentation on my rabbit stated that she was unaltered and I paid the spay fee in my adoption fee. I was told that the clinic would call me with my appointment time and would handle her from there. I was initially thrilled that this was being taken care of given how important it is to have this procedure done. It took three weeks and a lot of going back and forth to get her scheduled for her procedure. The clinic the shelter uses, SnipWell, is wonderful and I was impressed with their service. After dropping off my rabbit, I received a call from the clinic that they had been prepping her for surgery post-anesthesia and discovered that she had already been spayed judging from a scar and other developmental factors. They advised me to allow them to open her up anyways to make sure that was truly the case, and sure enough, it was. My poor rabbit had to undergo a very stressful experience and the risky nature of being put under anesthesia when she had in fact already been spayed. I feel that the medical staff at the shelter who cleared her for adoption should have paid better attention to whether she was unaltered or not to prevent this stress on the poor little bunny. Again, the front-desk staff here are great and are doing an important job, and I'm sure this isn't a problem that would have been encountered with adopting a cat or a dog.
