We recently adopted a kitten from the Carter Co shelter. All of the times we gave been there, the shelter was very warm and clean for a shelter. I especially appreciate the care and love they provide for special needs animals. I know all shelters do the best they can, and this one is doing a fantastic job helping the animals! We will continue to support and make donations to this shelter!

We had an emergency situation with our cat on a sunday, she was pregnant, her water had broke, but no kittens were coming and she was bleeding all over the house. This went on for over 24 hours. Fearing our cat would die if this continued, I called 911 and was advised there was nothing -they- could do but I could reach out to the animal shelter, leave a message, and then they would reach back out to me as people where "in and out of there all the time." So I did this, I called, left a voicemail advising of situation, that we do not currently have a working vehicle to get her to a vet, and my phone number so that they could reach back out to me. I felt a little reassured but this was misplaced sadly. They never called me back at any point, I was able to get a ride up to the shelter that following day at around 3pm we took our cat with us in hopes that they would take her and get her the help she needs, we were prepared to surrender her to them as all we cared about was that she was going to be ok. The people that run this shelter however do NOT want anymore animals regardless of situation. The woman at the front desk was extremely combative right out of the gate when we came in with a box in our hands, she immediately went and got another person who came out, we explained situation, and she proceeded to grill us as to "Why did you take her to a vet?" "Why did you not call up here first?" "Why didn't you get her here sooner?" We explained that we do not have a working vehicle at present and that even if we did, no vets were willing to work with us and that I did call but was not called back. She basically told us that it was our fault for not getting her to the shelter sooner and that they can take her but they are going to "put her in a kennel with barking dogs and screaming cats" overnight. I was a bit stunned at first but then realized that this is par for the course, shelters act like they want to help in commercials and online but the reality sadly is that they don't want to help, they don't want more animals, and they want to make it more difficult for those that do want them. If you have an animal emergency, don't put your hopes here. If you absolutely need a shelter, I'd recommend taking the extra trip to the washington county shelter.

Wonderful caring people that really do care for and about the animals. We adopted Milo from them on 08/06/23. His name on the cage was Rocky, but we were told his real name was found out later to be Doodle. He did not answer either, and with the help of our FB family, Milo seemed to be a name he liked and responded to. At first , he was heartbroken due to his previous owner passing and him being left on the streets for a month before being turned over to the shelter. But after a few days of unconditional love and to siblings to play with, he is full of energy, love, and kisses and ready to play at the drop of ANYTHING! A very, very happy addition to our family, and I am so glad we chose the Elizabethton-Carter County shelter above the others. Milo is the one on the right.

Everyone was very nice and helpful. The animals looked happy and taken care of. And the dog I adopted is the best.

They really care about the animals. The volunteers that work there are very hard workers. The cat rooms are awesome to just go sit in and play with kittens.
